A Study in Sherlock - New Pastiche Collection em Baker Street and Beyond (Novembro 2013)
New Holmes/Russell Book Coming! em Baker Street and Beyond (Novembro 2012)

I thoroughly enjoyed the adventures of Mary Russell, a teenaged genius who matches wits and joins forces with the "retired" Sherlock Holmes. She's a character I'd like to spend more time with. The story is well-plotted, and exciting in all the right ways, but I was totally bewildered by the mechanics of the climactic scene, and that might influence my decision to carry on with this series.

Hooray and yay! Another Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes “novel of suspense.” I couldn’t wait for this latest mystery in the now 18-book series. I’ve read and enjoyed them all and this is one of the best of the more recent ones. I highly recommend this series, but if you’re new to these historical novels, I urge you to start at the beginning with “The Beekeeper’s Apprentice.” And what a treat for you to be meeting Mary Russell for the first time.

This current novel contains many elements that kept me turning the pages, from the atmospheric writing to the clever banter between Holmes and Russell, to the family ancestry that is revealed through an elaborately coded old journal. As usual, Russell and Holmes work as a team, each one utilizing their finely honed skills to winkle out the facts and clues as they discover the secrets of the past that explain family relationships including Holmes’ son Damien.

King is an expert at developing fictional characters and weaving real life people into an engaging, top-tier historical mystery series. I highly recommend!

Laurie King supports and extends the Sherlockian Canon quite well in this latest Russell and Holmes episode. Holmes lineage and ancestry are the background for their investigation of a strange break-in and robbery attempt. Indian assailants trigger a need to examine certain aspects of Sherlock's early life particularly his relationship with Irene Adler. Should a definitive biograph of Holmes be produced, Laurie King would be my choice for an author.

2.5 stars

A woman wakes up in a place she doesn’t know. Nor does she know how she got there, nor even who she is. She appears to have been hurt and is wearing men’s clothes. She is able to get up and leave and follows a mute boy. Meantime, Sherlock Holmes, in Morocco, is looking for his wife, Mary Russell. She was there to shoot a film(?) and has disappeared.

I enjoyed the book more when it focused on Mary and the amnesia. I wasn’t as interested in what was happening in Morocco, nor in Holmes and what he was up to. Oh, near the end got a bit more interesting, as well. A bit of tension/suspense at that point made it a bit better. Overall, though, I’m not a fan. I think I picked up this book in a Little Free Library, not realizing it was #12 in a series; when I learned that, I did back up to read the first in the series (I don’t believe I was super-excited about it, either, but still wanted to read this one, anyway).… (mais)
