Colter Runs Against the Clock
Review of the Penguin Audio audiobook edition (December 6/15?, 2022) released after the G.P. Putnam's Sons eBook (September 27, 2022).

The offer was brief: $25K for information leading to the rescue of Ellie Kohl and the arrest of her kidnapper.

Colter Shaw arrives in a Maine coastal town where a victim has been kidnapped. The ransom deadline is set 12 hours later on the same day and no further negotiation or communication is possible. Non-payment will result in death for the victim. A previous incident had a successful resolution when the ransom was paid, but the current family (with a husband on the verge of bankruptcy) is not able to raise the $250K ransom. The kidnapper mistakenly thought the business was profitable.

The small town local police force are cooperative and provide Shaw the background information on the earlier case. He proceeds to also re-interview the previous victim and obtains some further clues. The hunt begins to narrow down to a possible series of locations, but then there is a setback. With only a few hours remaining to the deadline, will Colter Shaw bring the case to a successful conclusion?

This one requires a suspension of belief that the police would cooperate with someone who might otherwise be thought of as a vigilante. It is also somewhat unbelievable that when the police couldn't solve the current or the earlier case, that Shaw could be successful in only a few hours. An explanation is provided in the size of the police force and a detective distracted by a personal situation.

The short story case concludes with Shaw getting a tip that leads him directly on to the events of Hunting Time (Colter Shaw novel #4 - November 22, 2022).

This time I listened to the audiobook edition and the narration by Kaleo Griffith in all voices was excellent.

I don't know if this following anecdote about the smell of chocolate 🍫 is true, but it does provide a valuable clue in the investigation:
The online research he'd done after interviewing Abby Morgenstern revealed that another material imparts a smell similar to chocolate: electrical and metal parts, notably generators, motors and wires, when hot. One anecdote he read was about a car owner who took his vehicle to the dealer to see if the maintenance crew could find the chocolate bar he was convinced one of his boys had dropped into the heating vent. The first thing the mechanics did was shut the engine off and replace the alternator. The scent of Hershey's warned of a car soon to be engulfed in flame.

Twist After Twist
Review of the G.P Putnam's Sons eBook edition (May 11, 2021) released simultaneously with the hardcover and audiobook.

But Shaw believed there was another reason, a more important one, that Ashton had brought the eagle to San Francisco. It was the clearest message yet that Father wanted Colter, of all his children, to carry on his mission.

In a way this novel marks the conclusion of a Colter Shaw trilogy. Both of the preceding two novels had flashbacks and early clues towards the unsolved death and likely murder of Colter's father Ashton Shaw. With A Final Twist, that storyline comes to a conclusion.

The clues now lead Shaw to San Francisco and the search for a hidden object which is also being sought by a conspiracy of corporate culprits and their hired thugs. I can't get very spoilery about that but the object is something which would have a dramatic effect on politics and business in California. There are so many opposing forces in this one, that Colter needs allies and several surprises do appear, again of whom it would be spoilery to say anything further.

If anything, this book was kind of over the top with the number of trapped situations, sudden escapes, near-death reveals, surprise resurrections, sleight-of-hand deceptions etc. which were used. Sometimes in media res situations gave us flash-forwards for which the background and the context was only explained a chapter or even half a book later. For example, a character named "Nita" appears late in the book out of nowhere, and I had to stop and think "Who is Nita?". A Kindle word search revealed that she was the woman at the immediate beginning of the book whom Colter had been in the process of rescuing.

In any case, this was a satisfactory conclusion to the trilogy and I think it was fortunate that I read the 3 novels right after each other, rather than a year apart. So many of the background characters were more easily memorable this way.

I've been reading the Colter Shaw series after being introduced to the character in the recent Tracker TV series. I have already read (listened to) the 4th novel Hunting Time (2022) through an Audible Sale, so currently there are no further books in the pipeline. I can't imagine Deaver has retired the character though, given the likelihood of increased popular interest from the TV adaptation.

There was only the briefest of mentions about Colter Shaw's interest in guitar players which said: "Shaw’s own personal favorite guitarist was the Australian Tommy Emmanuel, who seemed to pry an entire orchestra from his git-fiddle." I had never heard of that musician previously, so had to look him up. It really is very stunning acoustic guitar playing. You can hear extended samples of his playing on YouTube here or on Spotify here.

They Call Him the Seeker
Review of the G.P. Putnam's Sons eBook (March 9, 2021) released simultaneously with the Penguin Audio audiobook.

Forgotten is a short story issued prior to the third full-length Colter Shaw novel The Final Twist (May 11, 2021) which was published 2 months later. It jumps out of the timeline of continuity as novel 2 ended in Washington State with Shaw headed back out again on his personal quest to investigate his father's death with the trail leading to San Francisco. The short story takes place in Ohio.

This case is not a standard missing person investigation. A young man with ADD and mental health issues has already been found, tried and convicted of a drug related murder. The parents do not believe he is guilty and insist that the circumstantial evidence was instead a frame-up. In order to earn the offered reward Colter Shaw has to find the real culprit behind the crime.

The pattern is now clear that the Colter Shaw short stories are along the lines of the "case of the week" of the Tracker TV episodes. The novels are extended epics more like a TV miniseries or movie, with the initial reward quest turning into an investigation of a much bigger conspiracy. I am continuing to enjoy both formats characterized by Deaver's talent for atmospheric settings and twist endings.

I Don't Know Why You Say Hello, I Say Goodbye
Review of the G.P Putnam's Sons eBook edition (May 12, 2020) released simultaneously with the hardcover and audiobook.

I define a cult as a group that presents a potential physical or mental danger to the members or those outside. “I borrow my test from a book by Margaret Singer and Janja Lalich, Cults in Our Midst. For them, a cult, one, controls the environment of the followers; two, has a system of rewards and punishments; three, creates a sense of powerlessness among the followers; four, uses fear for control; five, promotes dependency on the leader or cult; and, six, has a mission to reform followers’ behaviors.

I'm reading the Colter Shaw series after being introduced to the character in the recent Tracker TV series. This second novel continues straight on from The Never Game (2019) with reward seeker Shaw headed to Tacoma in Washington State following the lead provided at the end of the 1st novel.

The case involves two young men on the run after a supposed racial assault and cross burning at a Baptist Church. As Shaw's investigation continues the accusation appears to have been a case of mistaken identity. Things go wrong in the apprehension though and one man dies as a result by apparent suicide. Shaw feels guilt about the event and is determined to uncover the reasons why. He ends up infiltrating a secretive cult called the Osiris* Foundation as a result.

The grift and scam behind the cult is gradually revealed, but Shaw is trapped in the cult's compound with limited resources. Perhaps some allies will be found among the converts to uncover the cult leader's plans and to help save the others. Although it is not actually discussed in the book, the reason for the book's title soon becomes apparent.

This novel also continues the multi-story arc of Shaw seeking to understand his father's death and the secrets behind it which will apparently carry on in The Final Twist (Colter Shaw #3) (2021).

* Osiris being the Egyptian god of fertility, death, afterlife and resurrection is the reason for the name of the cult.

Trivia and Links
He removed a notebook from his computer bag, as well as a Delta Titanio Galassia fountain pen, black with three orange rings toward the nib. Writing with the instrument was neither pretense nor luxury. Colter Shaw took voluminous notes during the course of his reward jobs; the pen meant less wear and tear on his writing hand. It also was simply a small pleasure to use.

Like Reacher's toothbrush, Colter Shaw's deluxe fountain pen seems to be mentioned in every story, so I just had to look up some further information about it. There is a review of the Delta Titanio Galassia pen posted at Gourmet Pens.

Watch the extended trailer for the Colter Shaw Tracker TV series on YouTube here. The series has been renewed for a Season 2 after the shortened 13-episode Season 1. It is actually filmed in British Columbia, Canada although it is an American TV series on the CBS network.
