First things first - we'll start with all those ideas for squares for the Bingo card. so get your thinking caps on.
From there we'll start to rationalise similar ideas, maybe discount repeats from past years and then I'll randomly pick a perfect 25.
I'd expect to start whittling the list after the CATs have been agreed - it might be some ideas that don't get picked as a CAT would work as a Bingo Square.
I will keep a list of suggestions in this thread, please feel free to suggest, amend and discuss the various ideas.
THE list:

Thank you both for kicking us off.

Several of us talked about this last year...is there a way we can create our own bingo card?
8christina_reads
>7 Tess_W: The "official" Bingo cards have a somewhat complicated process. Someone has to create the designs and manually add each square's topic, using a program like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to create image files. Then those image files get sent to LShelby, who hosts the Bingo cards online and adds the ability to mark the squares. (I have no idea how she does it; either some kind of coding algorithm or literal magic.)
So, the short answer is no, it wouldn't be feasible to make individualized cards using the official process. But if you find a different method that enables you to create your own personal card, that's of course totally fine! And please share it here, so that others can do so too!

>21 MissWatson: Not that I know of. I've looked through my list of Bingodog categories since 2018 (which is when I joined the group) and that doesn't feature as a prompt. Added to the list.
I've started grouping themes that have commonality, so all the things featured on the cover are together, all the book is about are together. It's to help whittling down to a perfect 25. They are all there (I think!), just not necessarily in the order they were posted.

>7 Tess_W: I think I'm going to just create a Word table. I created a 5 x 5 table with row heights set at 1.3 inches. (I'm still filling in squares.) I will just shade the square as I read it. To post it, I will just snag the grid as an image. I'm probably going to approach it by using 2 called numbers per month and use whatever the ones for the Cross Stitch WIPGO are. I'm going to put specific books in squares, and if I read a book before it gets called, I will replace it with something else I want to read. (You could also do this in Excel.)
25Tess_W
>24 thornton37814: Great idea. I like the idea of Bingodog, but when 50% of the prompts are something I don't/won't read, it's not fun! I'm all for expanding my reading niche, but life is too short! I think I will just use a random generator for BINGO and numbers 1-5 for my monthly read.
26Helenliz
>25 Tess_W: Maybe suggest what you do want to see on the card?
27Tess_W
>26 Helenliz: Done that and they are usually included, but there are always 3-4 to far out there (for me) that I will never read them. And there are probably some squares that I would have that nobody else would want to read either! I think you guys do a great job--I'm just odd like that!

>25 Tess_W: You could make your own rules and allow a few exchanges. I'm pleased that we did children's/YA this year, so it won't be on again! Also pleased to find some good dog books this year.
I'd like to stick to categories that we can work out from the title, reviews or blurbs, so am concerned about topics like costume or fancy dress event; involves toys or dolls. Can we have a maximum of one animal topic? And not too many topics about covers, the things you can't judge books by.
More suggestions: published in a year ending in 3; rated above 4 on LT; an author you haven't read before.

I have not added published in a year ending in 3; and an author you haven't read before because they are duplicates of squares we have had in 2022 and 2021.

If there are any that are particularly difficult, for some reason, then it can be discussed; what exactly makes it difficult, can that be modified by wording or sources of information. I'd like to suggest a Wild Card option. One square, and one only, can be changed to reader's choice if it's not possible to fill it in the normal way. For example, one year we had "fairy story" that I found almost impossible to fill. I ended up with a lot of fairy DNFs that year and just wasted reading time. I would have appreciated the chance of being able to fill that square with something else.
The idea was sparked by majkia's WildcardCAT suggestion.

42sallylou61
>41 Helenliz:. I suggest that we have "normal" BingoDOG cards made with "Read a Cat" in the center as usual. The instructions will describe the wildcard square in case anyone wants to use it. The wildcard square will be optional; many people (probably most) will decide to use the normal BingoDOG card. If they decide to use the wildcard square, they probably will not use it for the same topic.
43dudes22
You could make the wildcard square also be "read a cat/kit" that someone could use for a square they don't read.
44LibraryCin
>42 sallylou61: That's what I was thinking, too!
Keep "Read a CAT" in the middle and make up the Bingo card as usual. And anyone who wants to can swap out one of the squares for the wild card.

Now CATs are decided I will leave this thread open until next weekend (sometime 12th/13th November) before making a list for the Bingo cards. Time to make any additional suggestions, random thoughts, refinements to existing suggestions etc. get them in now. >:-)

Because my eyesight is terrible, I read only ebooks, which makes some categories difficult e.g a book with pictures in it; geometric pattern on cover; with a book on the cover (anything to do with covers, really, because they're tiny black and white things in an ebook, and you have to search for them elsewhere.)
A really short book (we would have to define that further) - similar to 2021's less than 200 pages.
Involves toys or dolls - hard to find.
A classic - duplicates a CAT.
A book about dinosaurs (note that birds count as dinosaurs!) - hard to find. Any animal that's not a mammal?
A celebrity memoir - we don't want to encourage them.

Children’s books are okay, too, and there are lots of kid books about toys or dolls. The Velveteen Rabbit and Winnie the Pooh come to mind.

>56 LadyoftheLodge: Some of us don't read children's fiction. There's a whole KiddyCAT, and there are children's threads in some of the other CATs. One children's classic is a stretch for me. Dorothy Parker's Review of Winnie the Pooh

There will be a few cover related squares, it helps mix up the BingoCard.
I agree that Classic does duplicate the CAT this year. I'll take that one off.
Toys doesn't mean it has to be a children's book. Brideshead Revisited anyone? You could even go down the route of toys for adult entertainment, if that floats your boat (ahem). >;-)

Then again, if it is a real problem for participants, scrap it. We probably have enough topics for the Bingo card, right?

Hey y'all, I have the list of squares and will make the Bingo cards this weekend. Then I have to send them to LShelby so she can do her coding magic, so I expect we'll have the completed cards by the end of November/beginning of December.

I think that in the past the list of squares was published before the card came out, so that's what we were waiting for.

So - I'll be the first to ask for an interpretation of a couple of blocks:
For the "written by an author under 30", did the person who suggested it mean under 30 in 2023 or under 30 when they wrote it?
And how we defining "popular author", ie. "a popular author's first book"? I know the author page has a popularity number. Should that figure into it?

To find items search google. Several sites feature recently published authors.
For well-known authors who are not recent, "25 best novels written by writers under 30. https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/2013/01/25-best-novels-written-by-writers-un...
gives the age at which the author wrote it.
Some of the works were published in other languages, but that does not matter. I did not mean first translated; first published in any language is fine.
There is a much longer list under Good Reads https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/75580.Authors_Under_30.
Includes nonfiction such as Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank (written, not sure when published) and I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai.

>85 dudes22: & >86 LadyoftheLodge: "Popular author" and "zodiac sign" were both on the list I submitted. Both were on a list of prompts from another site. I would suggest a loose interpretation of popular. As for the zodiac sign, a google search for authors born in any specific month provides a long list. I believe Goodreads has a list too.

Here are the Bingo cards for 2023. :)
I am running slow this year, but I did get them done before December. The card images (that's where the real work is) were provided by christina_reads -- Thank you!
The magic codes are:
<img src="http://www.lshelby.com/Utilities/Bingo/bingocardC.php?type=CAT2023-A&color=black&markers=9-13-20-5-24-6">
<img src="http://www.lshelby.com/Utilities/Bingo/bingocardC.php?type=CAT2023-B&color=fuchsia&markers=2-13-19-7-22-15">
<img src="http://www.lshelby.com/Utilities/Bingo/bingocardC.php?type=CAT2023-C&color=orange&markers=5-8-17-15-21-1">
Don't forget that you can change the color of the markers to any of the following:
aqua, black, blue, fuchsia, gray, green, lime, maroon, navy, olive, orange, purple, red, silver, teal, white, and yellow
If you haven't used my cards before, instructions on how they work can be found at:

If there's any technical problems, drop me a note on my profile.
And, as always, have fun playing BINGO! :)

The cards look lovely, and there are so many squares I could have filled with my reading this year! Oh, well, let's hope I get that same kind of synchronicity next year.
I noticed the switched/stolen identities square, which was actually one of our ScaredyKIT topics this year, so there may be a few ideas for that on the wiki.

Earlier this month in posts in the >36 VivienneR: to >45 Helenliz: range we discussed letting participants who wanted it to have a wild card square for which the person would substitute a topic of her/his choosing for one (and only one) of the bingo squares. I don't think we made any decision about this. Will this be allowed?
120Helenliz
>119 sallylou61: If people want to use "Read a CAT" as a wildcard square for any that they are finding too difficult they can do. It's not on the Bingo cards as that would be too difficult to accommodate within the display constraints.

Just want to say thanks to everyone who planned this new BingoDOG challenge and got it going. It's always so much fun matching books with topics. And these cards are gorgeous!
Also have a couple of questions. I'm not sure if they were covered somewhere in this thread, but I didn't notice anything when I read through it.
STEM topics? Science, technology, engineering, math, right? But that could be fiction or nonfiction?
And a bestseller from 20 years ago - I'm assuming (or hoping) that means something 20 years or older, not just from 2003?

>121 jlshall: STEM, I agree with >122 markon:, dies not need to be non-fiction.
Bestseller form 20 years ago. Well that's a very good question. I had read it as a bestseller published in 2003, but bestsellers sometimes take a little while to reach the top of the charts, so maybe that's reading it more tightly than needed.
It was suggested by https://www.librarything.com/profile/VivienneR in >22 VivienneR:, maybe she'll have a clarifying opinion.

Yes, the bestseller topic is interesting. If it's limited to that one year, the choices are pretty slim. The ones I haven't already read are books I wouldn't want to read.

This will be my first Bingo. Is there a rule about whether one book can cover multiple squares, or is it up to each reader to decide that for themself? Cause y'know, I'll bet there's a memoir out there somewhere about a guitarist who had a terrible accident at a small-town inn.
135Helenliz
>134 KeithChaffee: Everyone makes their own rules on that score. If you can find said book, then you could choose to use it for as many squares as it covers. Or you could decide to make it fit into just one square (and maybe move it around when you find a book that covers one of the many squares your title would fit).
Have fun with it.

With our usual flexibility, I suggest that you may feel free to interpret the "bestseller of twenty years ago" any way you wish. A book might have published in 2003 but didn't get bestseller recognition until much later, or published years earlier but didn't reach bestseller status until 2003.
Also, there are many awards that indicate popularity without actually including the word "bestseller". I suggest using your own judgement to interpret the prompt, it was not intended to make things difficult, but just for the fun of looking back.
