Like the artist's "A humument" (London, 1970-1975), this is a verbal and graphic creation utilizing pages from W.H. Mallock's novel, " A human document" (new ed., London, 1892). "As the title suggests the literal 'heart' of the novel, a core of the central rectangles of Mallock's pages, has been worked on here"

The Postcard Century tells the story of the last hundred years in the 1900s' own words and images. Two thousand picture postcards and their messages give a vivid account of the day-to-day life of people and of what mattered to them, pleased them, shocked or amused them via the cards they chose to send. Year by year, the high and mighty, the low and worthy, and everyone in between talk of the characters, events, and hot spots of the century. Jokes from seaside, the disasters of war, the hazards of travel, the caprices of life in work and leisure--all are pictured and discussed. Each year begins with postcard views of the New York City skyline and of Piccadilly Circus. Though centered on the USA and England, cards come from every corner of the world, from Los Angeles to Beijing, from Antarctica to Alaska. Several themes emerge, notably those that evolved with the century: transportation (aviation takes us from the Wright brothers to NASA), the movies, fashion, vacations, and the role of women. Changes in the English language as used informally by Americans and Britons are powerfully registered. 2000 color illustrations.… (mais)

First edition of this version. "A Humument has been a work in progress since 1966 when artist Tom Phillips set himself a task: to find a second-hand book for threepence and alter every page by painting, collage and cut-up techniques to create an entirely new version. The book he found was an 1892 Victorian obscurity A Human Document by W.H. Mallock and Phillips transformed it into A Humument. The first version was printed by the Tetrad press in 1973, and Phillips has continued to transform it, revise it and develop it ever since." (source: http://www.tomphillips.co.uk/humument)… (mais)

Oh, Humument, I want to love you and give you 5 stars. The artwork is simply amazing (5 starts), but the story of toge/prose was hit or miss for me (3 stars), so I guess we'll meet in the middle (4 stars).
