Mary Ellen Hayward

This is a very lavishly illustrated book. The one problem is that some of the pictures, especially those with African-American, do not reproduce well, being too dark. I am not sure if better printing could have fixed the problem, or perhaps these pictures should have been reproduced in color, when possible. This strikes me as being a bit on the Confederate side. It is none the less a interesting book, and invaluable as a source of pictures, except as noted.
