His witty comments brighten up what could have been rather dry material. This is another I listened to on audiobook, read by Simon Prebble. The narrator was good and the subject matter interesting, but I think this would be better read in paper form, if only for the added benefit of diagrams. I had a lot of trouble following some of the more mind-bending notions in theoretical physics. ( )I do enjoy reading Stephen Hawking, he is a good writer and has a way with words. But I didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. I enjoyed [book:A Briefer History of Time|2094] more so than this book. There were just more parts of this book that I found more confusing, and even the illustrations didn't always help. There are a lot of illustrations included, which generally do help quite a bit in trying to understand the concepts discussed. astrofisica, fisica This book gets too much out of reality. Nice pictures. Nothing new, and by that I mean all of the Physics is now about one topic(Boring). sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
Amazon.com Amazon.com's Best of 2001 (ISBN 055380202X, Hardcover)Stephen Hawking, science's first real rock star, may be the least-read bestselling author in history--it's no secret that many people who own A Brief History of Time have never finished it. Hawking's The Universe in a Nutshell aims to remedy the situation, with a plethora of friendly illustrations to help readers grok some of the most brain-bending ideas ever conceived.Does it succeed? Yes and no. While Hawking offers genuinely accessible context for such complexities as string theory and the nature of time, it's when he must translate equations to sentences that the limits of language get in the way. But Hawking has simplified the origin of the universe, the nature of space and time, and what holds it all together to an unprecedented degree, inviting nonscientists to share his obvious awe and love of the unseen forces that shape it all. Yes, it's difficult reading, but it's worth it. Hawking is one of the great geniuses of our time, a man whose life has been devoted to thinking in the abstract about the universe. With his help, and pictures--lots of pictures--we can seek to understand a bit more of the cosmos. --Therese Littleton (retirado da Amazon Fri, 24 Apr 2009 07:58:23 -0400) O primeiro ciclo de testes foi encerrado.
