Sobre mimI'm something like a geologist/geophysicists and was thirty before I discovered Dostoyevsky, John Graves, poetry and much other good literature. I think my deepest interest is in literature about place, especially if there is a geological tilt. But I like a large spectrum of book types, although what I like the most seems to change frequently.

I need to get Martin Ling's life of the Prophet to read alongside it, but otherwise I can start now...!

I know I failed miserably with the OT, I couldn't maintain any semblance of interest in it...not literal enough or mystical enough for me in those early stages. I've just bought the Qu'ran and it seems much more to my liking.
I am guessing you will need a 12 month break before another mammoth project of this nature?
Dennis.

Just wanted to say I enjoyed your review of Alter's commentary on Samuel I & II. It's reminded me that it's been on the wishlist for a while and to keep an eye for it when I'm browsing the bookstores!
All the best,
Paul.

The Peloponnesian war is fascinating, but very slow reading. Thucydides has a lot of detail, and the fine new edition I am reading expands everywhere. It's a great edition - I recommend it highly - but I've been working through it for about a year, and I often branch out to modern historians who have their own comments.

(Yes, Empires of the Word is very interesting. I haven't gotten to the part about Celtic languages yet, though.)
