Typical German Expressionism: great sets, horrible over-acting, comically simple characters, and boring to watch. I guess you could say that this is to Frankenstein what Nosferatu is to Dracula - except that no one in their right mind would try to argue that this is better than Frankenstein. Also, it's difficult to watch a movie about persecuted German Jews without seeing it in a post-WWII context (I don't know whether that's good or bad for the film, but at least it provides something to think about while you're waiting for the inane romantic subplot to play out).
