I felt this book was ok, but didn’t really impress me. I feel this way because of the lack of diversity in the story. The story involves only a traditional Caucasian family with the white picket fence and no mention of any other races. To be specific there is an illustration of the boy playing catch with his father in front of their house surrounded by a white picket fence. However, I did enjoy the diction the author used to present the text in the story. There were a lot of descriptive words that showed a sound or action in the story. For instance, in the same image I mentioned above, the author uses, “whoosh!” to describe the baseball going through the air. I feel this type of description can aid young readers into understanding sounds and actions. The next reason I enjoyed the story was because of the author’s style, specifically how he presented the text. In each image, the words to move the story ahead are presented in yellow rectangle with black letters and clearly points out what words on the page move the story ahead. This yellow also compliments the colors in the illustrations well. For instance an image of the boy sitting in a movie with his father, and the seats are purple which matches well with the yellow text box. In the end, I felt the message of this story was that even if you don’t have superpowers, you can still be a good father by spending time and caring about your children.
