An early, perhaps the first, computer-hacking novel.A world championship chess match is the backdrop for this intriguing science fiction detective story. The main computer of the Federal Reserve is being tampered with by a sinister power, and the results could wreak havoc with the fiscal policy, causing the U.S. economy to fragment into pieces. Actual chess games are used, and they act as launching pads for journeys into strange and challenging worlds. The mind has the power to project itself and to manipulate its environment. It has the power to shape external reality according to its inner reality. And when powerful minds become engaged in combat, a mighty and fierce struggle ensues. I really didn't care for this book. The communicating with computers and traveling through cases was a bit much for me. I am not into chess either so the references to it were lost to me. ( )

Dancing Magicians by John Caris

In sixty-seven brief chapters author John Caris takes readers to a delightful San Francisco neighborhood of shops and restaurants (alas, warning that it does not exist).

Readers meet Ralph and Shasta Garland and their two splendid cats, Lucy and Karma, who serve as a “Greek chorus” to the events that ensue. The human cast is large, varied and interesting. We sense that friendships they form will endure.

Complications and difficulties are offset by clever solutions. A wonderful magical performance, beautifully detailed, brings satisfaction to the participants and to readers. I would gladly have been in its audience. ( )
