Coming Up Roses, with its excess of stories (19) and sketchy opener (the scene-posing-as-story “Afterbirth”), threatens to be another undernourished grab-bag of fragments, anecdotes and incomplete ideas, with the prize-winning story, “The Wrong Shoe”, its obvious highlight. But here’s the good news: Laing is a real talent and this is a real – and really quite satisfying – collection. “The Wrong Shoe”, the short chronicle of a New Zealand woman finding sexual misadventure in a shaken post-9/11 New York, is a sharp-sighted and unsettling story about reinvention, yet it’s by no means the best thing here. Laing finds most of her material in the tense, unhappy relationships of the middle classes, the fodder of many a great short story.... Contém
Prize-winning writer Sarah Laing has written a superb collection of stories that are beautifully written, vividly rendered and which stimulate and surprise. 'Imagine that you're a statistic,' says one of the characters in these quirky, haunting stories of people whose inner lives let them escape the boxes that others put them into. The single mum, the student working in the pie factory, the newborn baby, the dying woman, the Kiwi alone in New York and many others pass through these stories and in doing so let us enter their lives. I enjoyed reading the collection, most stories worked for me.
I liked it enough that I will try her first novel Dead People's Music which was published last year. ( )
