Abstract: Good leaders possess counseling skills which enable them to develop positive relationships with those they lead. A high level of leader effectiveness requires training. Techniques are described which teach leaders how to release a group's productive and creative potential. These are based on a "no-lose" formula, in which leaders refrain from using their power or authority in resolving conflicts. Group members participate in decision-making and setting group goals that meet the needs of all members. Leaders must develop listening skills to help subordinates solve their problems. They learn to make their management teams more effective by turning conflict into cooperation; good performance results from groups whose members act cohesively. Organizational applications of the training model are discussed. A procedure for performance evaluation is presented which communicates the productivity expectations of the leader, consistent with the philosophy of L.E.T.… (mais)

My initial impression was that it has to many anecdotes and not enough meat there is no bibliography, a skimpy table of contents et cetera. However as I started reading it I enjoyed it, and found that the contents actually seem useful.

I first encountered these concepts about 1983 as Parent Effectiveness Training which is based on his original work Group Centered Leadership published in 1955.

Parent Effectiveness Training did not work very well for me and my wife, and we eventually stopped using it.

However having gone through a Leader Effectiveness Training class this week, I now understand better when to apply to those tools and when they won't work, and feel that I will be much more effective using them now.

The world needs leaders, and good communication is essential to good leadership.
