Puss in Boots was about a cat and his owner who became rich through lies. Puss would play up his master to the king. In th end the king was pleased with Puss' master that he let the master marry his daughter. I love the story of Puss in Boots. I would definitely read this to my students as a fun read aloud. I think all ages would enjoy this book, especially grades 1-5. ( )

A miller had three sons, and in his will he left them his mill, his donkey, and his cat. The youngest son thought that he got the worst of the deal by getting the cat. Puss, the cat, asked his master for a sack and a pair of boots. Puss set out and caught a rabbit and took it to the King, courtesy of the Marquis of Carabas, the name his made for his master, the King was very pleased. He continued to bring the King things in his master’s name. One day Puss knew that the King was traveling near and had his master go and swim in the river. Puss shouted that the Marquis of Carabas was drowning, and the King’s guards “saved” him, and dressed him in fine clothing. They set out for a ride around the country side. Puss went a head and scared everyone into saying that all the land and crops belonged to the Marquis of Carabas. He then went to the Ogre’s palace, and tricked and killed the Ogre. The King, his daughter, and the Marquis went into the palace where the Marquis of Carabas was given the King’s blessing to marry his daughter, they were married that day.

I really liked reading the tale of Puss and Boots, I as well as most children was aware of Puss due to the movie Shreck, but enjoyed reading what really happened. I though the plot was very smooth and understandable for children of all ages. I think the children would enjoy this rags to riches book, and some of the trickery involved. This book would make a good read aloud, and is short enough to keep attention.

1) Have children design a pair of boots that they would like to set out in to change their future as Puss in boots did.
2) Discuss the valuable characteristics in every person. The youngest son thought he was disadvantaged by getting the cat, yet he came out on top, because of the cats valuable characteristics.
