After defeating the dreaded Hunnza fleet, Jim Endicott wants a "normal" life. But his wish is not to be, for a new and even more terrible conflict is stirring. First, though, the Outsider has to find his embittered hero. Distraught over the death of his father, Jim has plunged deep into the underground, where danger of another kind lurks in the shape of a girl as bad as she is irresistible. But the Packlord will stop at nothing to succeed, including assassination. Grief is no stranger to me. I know the pain—sharp and biting—lasts for a wrenching moment in time to be replaced by the deep ache of perennial loss. Somewhere in between these two, when hope rears its ephemeral shape, time, motion, and pain stop. Bewildered, I turn to hope—clutch its hem, twist the robes—pleading to the Fates to deny what may be inevitable. All it takes is an act of will to stop the downward spiral. But lack of will is part of the dementia. I dedicate this book to those poor souls whose struggle we look on with horror, tears, and love.
