Romance. Humor (Fiction.) Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:Told in dual narrative, This Is My Brain in Love is a stunning YA contemporary romance, exploring mental health, race, and, ultimately self-acceptance, for fans of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter and Emergency Contact.
Jocelyn Wu has just three wishes for her junior year: To make it through without dying of boredom, to direct a short film with her BFF Priya Venkatram, and to get at least two months into the year without being compared to or confused with Peggy Chang, the only other Chinese girl in her grade.
Will Domenici has two goals: to find a paying summer internship, and to prove he has what it takes to become an editor on his school paper.
Then Jocelyn's father tells her their family restaurant may be going under, and all wishes are off. Because her dad has the marketing skills of a dumpling, it's up to Jocelyn and her unlikely new employee, Will, to bring A-Plus Chinese Garden into the 21st century (or, at least, to Facebook).
What starts off as a rocky partnership soon grows into something more. But family prejudices and the uncertain future of A-Plus threaten to keep Will and Jocelyn apart. It will take everything they have and more, to save the family restaurant and their budding romance.

CW: Depression, anxiety, thoughts of dying

Public service announcement
Please understand that you will want to eat potsticker dumplings at some point during this book. I therefore suggest having a takeaway menu for your local potsticker dumpling restaurant handy at all times or the ingredients necessary to make them.
End of Public service announcement.

A good exploration of mental health and the stigma associated with it. The characters were relatable and their journey believable. I valued the inclusion of a young person with ADHD but it felt like the entire cast had complex issues so the novel seemed a bit busy at times. I wouldn't call this book a romance as the main focus was how two teens with mental health issues navigated their relationship whilst dealing with family and school expectations/commitments. I loved the family dynamics in both Jocelyn's and Will's families. An enjoyable book. ( )

Cute little piece of fluff (with bonus depression and anxiety!). The last chapter ruined the book for me though; it really comes across as preachy and unnecessary and makes the book about "issues" instead of the story, which is fairly tidy and predictable. It would have been a 3 star read otherwise. The long-term use of SSRIs by Mrs. Wu is problematic for me because that's not something that should be normalized. The data does not support it. ( )

Two high school students, one who suffers with anxiety issues and the other with depression, meet and fall in love, essentially. It started out fine, but the representation of anxiety and depression was so heavy-handed that it became too much and began to feel unnecessary and redundant. The plot was fine: daughter of the owner of a struggling Chinese restaurant hires an African American/Italian boy from a rich family as an intern, and despite their differences they fall for each other. But there needed to be a lot more editing to make the novel work, I think. ( )

A meet-cute YA romance that takes a somewhat somber turn as Will and Jocelyn battle the personal mental demons that are impacting their relationship. Jocelyn hires Will to boost marketing of her family's Chinese restaurant and it's attraction at first sight during the interview. Will is experienced at managing his panic attacks and other issues thanks to the help of a therapist. Jocelyn doesn't recognize her depression until Will suggests it, and still she doesn't fully recognize it. I liked the give and take between Will and Jocelyn but like depression, the novel kind of bogged down for me when their emotional/mental states suffered. I do appreciate that this book provides a lens on mental illness in young people. ( )
