Cold cases, murder, lies, and an unimaginable truth. Sydney Detective August Shaw has spent the last decade of work solving cold cases. His work is his entire life, and he's convinced a string of unsolved cold-case suicides are linked to what could be Australia's worst ever serial killer. Problem is, no one believes him. Senior Constable Jacob Porter loves his life in the small town of Tallowwood in northern New South Wales. He runs summer camps for the local Indigenous kids, plays rugby with his mates, has a close family, and he's the local LGBTQIA+ Liaison and the Indigenous Liaison Officer. When human remains are found in the camping grounds at Tallowwood Reserve, Jake's new case turns out to be linked to August's cold cases, and Jake agrees they're not suicides at all. With Jacob now firmly in August's corner, they face one hurdle after another. Even when more remains are found, they can't seem to gain ground. But when the body of a fellow police officer turns up under the same MO, it can't be ignored anymore. August and Jake must trace the untraceable before the killer takes his next victim or before he stops one of them, permanently. Contains mature themes.… (mais)

N. R. Walker - I've remarked before how she loves to try anything - here she is trying her hand at a detective novel - and succeeds, of course. Priority was given to the crime, but the romance meshed in nicely. Jacob, the gay, aboriginal senior sergeant who becomes involved in a serial murder cold case led by August, a workaholic detective who lost his partner to the serial killer.

In her usual romance novels, N. R, Walker's work is full of wit and fun. This was a little underplayed here, except for when she was talking about the small town of Tallowwood. Hence my 3.5 star rating. ( )

Great story well written!
The mystery/suspense is a growing pile of obviously related cold cases which were labelled as suicide despite being entirely too similar and with a few things that were nonprobative. August is the Sydney Detective who has been obsessively working on on the cases and gaslighted by the brass. Jake is the Senior Constable in the rainforests in northern New South Wales who contacts August because he has a skeleton with a lemon tree growing out from between the ribs. Both lawmen and most of the murder victims are LGBTQIA. Both officers are drawn to each other and provide the romantic aspect quite nicely. Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook!
Antony Ferguson is the accomplished voice actor who makes the people come alive. ( )

This was an interesting premise, and I liked both characters separately and for each other. This was my first by this author, but I'll be happy to read another. ( )

DNF, stopping at 26%, not because it's terrible, but because I started wandering off even though I usually enjoy murder mysteries. That's not a good sign. I'm really disappointed. One star for good characters and another for the elements and the setting, but minus three for prose, plot, and losing my interest. :(

I used to not mind being told what a character's feeling, rather than shown in action and reaction. But that will not fly in a romance, and the author does it constantly here. I was already questioning the forensic/chain-of-evidence side, also not a good sign. According to several reviews, none of those get better. *sigh* ( )

I'm so impressed by how N.R. Walker can virtually write anything under the sun and do it well.

This police procedural suspense novel focuses primarily on the case itself, with the romance not as overtly prominent but certainly serving as the perfect compliment on the side with its slow burn goodness.

The way Jake and August's relationship steadily grows into something more is so organic and beautiful, I loved it! Even if you're not really into mystery/crime books, I say give this one a go :) ( )

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
