Fans of Jeri Massi's Peabody series will welcome this late addition to the adventures of a gang of kids from Peabody, Wisconsin. Although this is a different gang, a lot of the faces will look familiar.Jean, the youngest of the group, is sucked into their adventure when they form "The Hall of Heroes" and use a metal garden shed as their rendezvous point. From the start, Eddy Reinbach and his two cronies hound the "Heroes" and interrupt their meetings with insults and snowball fights. War ensues, with the bullies increasingly successful. Can our Heroes survive? Meanwhile, Jean becomes a helper for a reclusive, mysteriously pale woman who has recently joined the church. Jean discovers Martha Harris's tragic secret and realizes that it is time to be a real hero. Digger comes to her aid, and a sort of new Hall of Heroes is formed. In it’s own way this is a pretty intricate little mystery about false news printed in the local paper, with some red herrings and a few rather sly clues. Languagewise it might not be completely suited for it’s age group (older than Elis, but still), we had to spend a fair bit of time getting to the bottom of some pretty complicated words. For me, though, it suffers from the same thing most puzzle mysteries do: it’s all plot and too little character. Lasse and Maja, the kid detectives, seem completely void of personality. Still, I enjoyed snuggling up with my boy and speculating about whodunit – as did he. Hopefully we’ll read some more of these. ( )
