An exciting and dramatic story about how life began and developed on Planet Earth. "The authors explain how the first living cell was created, and how the cells multiply and create jellyfish and worms, and then fish with bendy necks, which drag themselves out of the water into swampy forests. They tell the story of the biggest creatures that have ever walked on land-- the dinosaurs. Long after that, hairy creatures who have babies, not eggs, take over, stand on two legs and spread around the world, some of them living through cataclysmic events such as ice ages and volcanic eruptions. Everyone living today is related to these survivors. With delightful illustrations including lots of detail and humour, all carefully researched and checked, this book shows the development of life on Earth in a truly accessible and simple way."--… (mais)

The Story of Life is a book about evolution. The book is a timeline of the history of life and how it began. It starts from the very beginning when there was nothing on earth but volcanoes and oceans. About three million years ago, was the first record of the first cells. Some of the cells created oxygen, which we use to breathe. Cells began to evolve and adapt to their environments. The seas began filling with all sorts of creatures creating the food chain. Three hundred million years ago those creatures began to move onto land and adapt to their surroundings. Not too long after, something happened to most of the living population on Earth. Scientist have yet to figure out what happened. The only life that survived was lizard-like creatures. This began the stage of the dinosaurs. The lived for about 200 million years until a meteorite crashed into Earth. The only ones to survive was mammal like creatures which evolved into many monkey species. These then evolved into the first humans, which evolved throughout history to today. This kind of book can be trouble regarding to religion. Some parents might not want their kids to learn about evolution. If a teacher wants to read it or recommend this book , they should let the parents know. Overall, this is a really good book if students are interested in this topic. ( )

This is the story about how the first cells came about on earth and lead to dinosaurs and eventually mammals. It talks about how animals change throughout time through evolution. I like the illustrations as well as the explanation of what could be a difficult topic to understand for children. In the end it also says that humans and animals will keep evolving, which is an important point. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. ( )
