Family & Relationships. Nonfiction. HTML:New York Times Bestseller: This anthology of Erma Bombeck's most memorable and humorous essays is a tribute to one of America's sharpest wits.
When she began writing her regular newspaper column in 1965, Erma Bombeck's goal was to make housewives laugh. Thirty years later, she had published more than four thousand columns, and earned countless laughsâ??from housewives, presidents, and everyone in between.
With grace, good humor, and razor-sharp prose, she gently skewered every aspect of the American family. This collection holds the best of her columnsâ??not just her famous quips, but also the heartbreaking observations that gave her writing such weight. In 1969, Erma wrote: "screaming kids, unpaid bills, green leftovers, husbands behind newspapers, basketballs in the bathroom. You can never go wrong with Bombeck. She is always consistently good and funny and true to real life. Women likely to enjoy her books more than men. Any woman who was a housewife with kids...will feel right at home.

I am long past marriage and my children are over 50 but rereading Erma is still relevant and touches the heart. ( )

I saw it at the library. It was very nostalgic, reading about the days when women managed the house and Christmas was a religious holiday. ( )

I never tire of Bombeck's wit and wisdom. When I am tired or frustrated as a parent or wife I can read one of her stories and get a great chuckle. Her stores are so down to earth and "real" they make me feel a part of something great and wonderful as a homemaker. They allow me to step back and laugh at the messiness of life. Thank you Erma! ( )

My deeds will be measured not by my youthful appearance, but by the concern lines on my forehead, the laugh lines around my mouth, and the chins from seeing what can be done for those smaller than me or who have fallen.
