Everywhere Detective Gavin DeGrassi looks he's reminded of his attack by the Breath Play Killer. It's in the house he lives in with his partner and Dom, Ben Haverson. It's in the sympathetic yet pitying looks he receives from his fellow detectives when he returns to the force after a year-long hiatus. It's in the suffocating coddling of his entire family, and the relentless reporter demanding an exclusive of his ordeal. Most of all, it's in his lack of submission to Ben, who isn't convinced Gavin's recovered enough to trust the power exchange between them. The miraculous recovery of two teen boys from a twisted kidnapper gives him heart, and Gavin's determined to prove he can handle anything despite increasing strain between him and Ben, painful nightmares, and panic when anyone touches him.But his next case is too close for comfort: a friend and colleague found raped and murdered in a fate chillingly similar to what could have been his own, and this killer isn't stopping with one cop. As the body count rises and taunting souvenirs are being hand-delivered to Gavin, he faces a frustrating lack of leads, a crushing need to prove himself, and a sinking suspicion the imprisoned kidnapper's reach is further than originally thought. A miasma of uncertainty and fear threaten to suffocate him when he asks a question with which he's overwhelmingly familiar: what happens when a victim is pushed too far?… (mais)

I didn't like how contrived the last book ended, with the characters having to toss out all common sense in order to end up where they did, (otherwise I enjoyed the book though), so I could tell I felt a little less sympathetic to the characters recovering from that in this one. Not that people who do really dumb things deserve terrible consequences, just that it was very trying to watch them waltz right into that danger, and that exasperation just continued on with this long recovery. It just shouldn't have been necessary to begin with because it could have so easily been avoided with a tiny bit of common sense or precaution.

But, by the time the characters finally started leaning on each other again, it was easier to move past that frustration, and the book picked up. This case wasn't as engaging for me, but I appreciated the creativity of the characters to work around their limitations, so I still enjoyed the book above average. ( )

A.J. Rose has managed to find the perfect balance between a good and heart-stopping mystery, a gripping love story and some very hot scenes. I loved the first book in the series, Power Exchange. The characters from that book are continued into this one. After the ending of the first book where Gavin and Ben had nearly been killed by the character known as "The Breath Killer", it was hard to not get immersed in Gavin’s continuing pain, and Ben’s total helplessness when he tries to lighten that load for the man he loves and the strain that it is putting on their relationship. “How could I give my whole self to him if I no longer recognized who I was?” When Gavin and his partner Myah are put in charge of the investigation of the brutal murder of a fellow police officer, I saw so many ways in which this could be devastating to Gavin’s recovery. The love and connection between these two men only grows more intense in the face of all that might destroy them and slowly Gavin is able to let go of his demons one by one. This story is as much a mystery as it is a love story. I can't stress enough that the mystery in this book is good, well plotted, thrilling, but also heartbreaking. I solved the mystery about the same time as Gavin and Myah did. ( )

Terrific story that was much better than Power Exchange. This story was much more of a murder mystery with Ben and Gavin's relation taking a backseat. The multiple murders were horrible. I was glad to see Trent get his payback. This was a fast paced read with Gavin and Ben both still working out their relationship problems which were numerous. I enjoyed Cole and Myah's romance along with the dynamics of the whole DeGrassi clan. The plot twists and turns kept the story moving well The HEA ending was very well done and much needed after the gruesome murders. ( )

Much much better book than the first one on all accounts.

The one thing that left me unsatisfied was I didn't get to see Louderback's fate. I really would have loved to see the pig get suspended/fired/imprisoned.
Other than that, all was great. We got to see Ben's insecurities, which made him more real to me.
I would like to someday read a short written from his perspective, or any other than Gavin's. I know the workings of his brain, but I know that usually differs to how other people see that person, and I would like to see that side of Gavin very much.

I was also intrigued by the third book teaser, and I would like to see our boys involved in a threesome emotionally as well as physically.

Looking forward to book #3! ( )

I seriously love this book. Well the whole series in fact. And the fact that I have to think about what to say is an indication of how I feel. I don't want this to deteriorate into a sappy, oh, my god, oh my god worship and I can't quite put into words exactly how it's made me feel.

Was it perfect? No, just like the first book there were bits that either made me go WTH..and bits were one of the MC's or other characters irritated me. Times where something I found blatantly obvious went unnoticed by the characters and I was wondering how they ever got anything done. But these bits fell away in the total of the book. Overall it was a brilliant read, with a great mix of relationship building, action, mystery and of course our two guys getting all hot and heavy with each other.

There's not a lot of kink in this one, but I honestly wasn't expecting it either. Not after book 1. What there is though, is meaningful and with a sense of rightness. No "scene for BDSM sake" (if you know what I mean...)

It's sad to think it's all over now, as I think we were told by the epilogue in the book. I would have loved more, but then with characters like these, where they "speak" to me, I never want to say goodbye! ( )
