- Olive Sayce, born to a family of shipbuilders on the Tyne, was in 1940 the first in her family to go to university. She became a distinguished scholar of the Middle Ages and made important contributions to the understanding of lyric poetry in German and its European context. In 1948, she married Richard Anthony Sayce, also an academic.
