Même avec le visage fracassé par un tir de chevrotine en pleine tronche, même si les cicatrices internes changent sa personnalité et lui font douter de ses capacités à reprendre le boulot, même si sa hiérarchie ne souhaite pas le revoir car sa tête est trop pénible à regarder et plombe le moral des troupes …
Même s’il s’agit d’une jeune femme, autrefois très belle et désormais totalement défigurée.
C’est ce qui est arrivé au Capitaine Noémie Chastaing au cours d’une intervention. Désormais, elle fait peur, elle se fait peur avec son visage en vrac et son moral à zéro. Son compagnon n’a pas le courage de continuer avec elle. Et on l’expédie dans une ville tranquille de l’Aveyron où il ne se passe jamais rien.
Sauf que l’on vient de sortir de la surface du lac un cadavre, immergé là depuis plus de 25 ans … Et Noémie retrouve peu à peu ses réflexes, intacts sous la surface couturée de son visage dévasté.
Une affaire particulièrement complexe, un cold case qui dérange bien des familles. Et une enquête minutieuse, risquée, à rebondissements inattendus, spectaculaire mais réaliste. Une renaissance aussi ...
Le style d’Olivier Norek est toujours aussi percutant, ses chapitres brefs, ses personnages ciselés, compliqués, une approche psychologique fouillée. La chronique d’une renaissance. Cela change des polars où les héros sont fatigués. Quelle femme, cette Noémie !

Olivier Norek signs a thriller in the form of a radical ecological manifesto which unfolds in a France in crisis on the eve of the 2022 presidential election!
Under the cover of a global ecological catastrophe, it is an incisive book full of humanity which makes us think about the problems linked to ecology with the responsibilities of the Government, Businesses and, insidiously, ourselves!

As I could only get part way through this book, I'm unable to give it a higher rating. I read many crime thrillers but couldn't get engaged with this. I was hoping for a new series...

Polar sur fond de crise écologique. On découvre Virgil Solal, ancien militaire qui, après la mort de sa fille à cause de la pollution atmosphérique, décide d'affronter les leaders du monde pour amorcer le changement. Il capture donc le PDG de Total, qu'il promet de libérer contre un changement de la politique du groupe.
Ce récit hyper réaliste s'ancre dans le présent, ça se passe en 2022, et est parsemé de références à des faits qui se sont produits plus ou moins récemment.
Ce fut une lecture agréable et à recommander !!

Capitaine Noémie Castain will mit ihrem Team einen gefährlichen Drogenhändler festnehmen, der mit einem Schrotgewehr drauflosschießt. Noémie erleidet schwere Verletzungen im Gesicht. Eine Gesichtshälfte wird für immer entstellt bleiben. Ihr Vorgesetzter will sie weghaben und schickt sie für 30 Tage in die südfranzösische Provinz, wo sie feststellen soll, ob es sich lohnt, dort eine Dienststelle zu unterhalten. Sie hat gerade ihren Abschlussbericht erstellt, als im Stausee eine Leiche in einem Plastikfass auftaucht. Die DNA-Analyse zeigt, dass es sich um eines der drei Kinder handelt, die verschwanden, als das alte Avalone im Stausee verschwand. Ein Verdächtiger war damals schnell ausgemacht, den man aber nie fassen konnte. Notgedrungen muss sich Noémie mit der Vergangenheit Avalones beschäftigen und die Leichen der anderen Kinder finden. Doch die Bewohner machen es ihr nicht leicht.
Mich hat dieser Krimi total begeistert. Es fiel mir schwer, das Buch aus der Hand zu legen. Der Schreibstil ist recht nüchtern, lässt sich aber sehr flüssig lesen.
Die Charaktere sind teils vielschichtig, teils etwas klischeehaft dargestellt. Noémie muss nicht nur mit ihrer Entstellung fertig werden, sondern auch damit, dass ihr Lebensgefährte und Kollege Adriel damit nicht fertig wird. Er hat nicht einmal den Mut, mit ihr zu reden. Auch ihr Chef traut ihr den Dienst nicht mehr zu und serviert sie ab. Zum Glück hat No mit Melchior einen tollen Therapeuten, der ihr zur Seite steht. In Avalone geht es beschaulich zu und Noémie muss damit erst einmal zurechtkommen. Dann wird sie mit dieser alten Geschichte konfrontiert, die bei den Bewohnern des Dorfes Wunden hinterlassen und zu manch wunderlichen Erklärungen geführt hat. Die alten Geheimnisse sollen aber nach Meinung einiger auch geheim bleiben. Da Noémie nicht nach Paris zurück darf, gräbt sie nun weiter und gerät sogar in Lebensgefahr.
Die Ermittlungen sind nicht einfach, denn das Wasser des Stausees hat die Spuren und Geheimnisse von damals überflutet. Aber Noémie Castain ist eine starke und fähige Person, die sich nicht so leicht geschlagen gibt.
Es ist ein sehr spannender und fesselnder Krimi, den ich nur empfehlen kann.

Well written or should it be translated never sure where a foreign language book is concerned. Atmospheric clever descriptive engaging from the first page until the end, and with one of the most shocking surprising starts I recall in over forty years of thriller reading. A Police procedural set in the depressing grim underbelly of Paris that hopefully the average tourist does not see. Gruesome violence at times but also witty banter between colleagues, sometimes laugh out loud humour, and quality characterisation throughout. Not a great mystery full of plot twists, and ends all too soon, but I totally recommended this short quirky story.

Pas simple d’écrire cette note de lecture, alors je vais faire court et direct. Le sujet est important et intéressant, ce livre a eu un succès certain et j’en ai lu des critiques qui m’ont donné envie de m’aventurer dans un genre qui, je le sais, n’est pas le mien. Et je m’y suis brûlé les ailes.
Je n’ai pas aimé parce que je n’aime pas ce genre. Je n’ai pas aimé parce que je n’ai pas les codes pour ce type de livre et que je n’ai pas trouvé assez de ce que j’étais venu chercher : une vision de la fameuse Jungle qui va au-delà des reportages habituels. J’y ai vu une dénonciation de tout ce qui peut s’y passer, des choses que je pouvais imaginer, d’autres non, mais en refermant le livre, je n’ai pas l’ombre du commencement d’une piste. Comment aurait-on pu éviter cela ? Comment aurait-on pu mieux gérer cela une fois qu’on l’avait laissé se produire ?
A la place, j’ai vu une succession d’horreurs ou de situations indignes, avec ce qui m’est apparu comme une certaine complaisance à décrire le sordide ou le dégradant. Et c’est parce que je ne vois pas au-delà de ces descriptions qui me semblent gratuites que je n’arrive pas à lire ce genre littéraire-là. Je crois que j’ai juste été contente de refermer le livre et de passer à autre chose, ce dont je ne suis pas fière.

Olivier Norek is an interesting author and personality: a Captaine in the judicial Police of the Seine-Saint-Denis who has taken an unpaid sabbatical to further a career as a screen writer and novelist. His work features the police force as one might expect and he brings to the table experience and inside knowledge. Before joining the police he volunteered to work with the Pharmaciens sans Frontiers and participated in the provision of materials used in refugee camps in theatres of war and later spent two years in the French army. Between 2013 and 2016 he wrote three successful crime thrillers, before collecting critical acclaim for his 2017 novel: Entre Deux Mondes.

The Jungle is the name used for the refugee camp just outside the town of Calais on the north coast of France. It was an unofficial camp (but tolerated by the French Government) filled with refugees who were waiting to get across to England. The vast majority were dependent on the people smugglers or their own efforts to get across to the promised land of the Youké. These were the people who lived between the two worlds; stateless, fantoms almost, not quite of the earth and not quite of the heavens. The Jungle was in existence for an 18 month period between 2015 and 2016 and at its peak it was home to 10,000 people. It was a no-go area for the police and various communities: Afghans, Syriens, Egyptians, Ethiopians, Sudanese and others, fought to gain the upper hand. Conditions in the camp were poor and it was only the various aid agencies, who could get a foothold inside to provide some relief. Norek has based his story around life in the Jungle. A Syrian member of the rebel secret police (Adam) is waiting for the arrival of his wife and child who are in the hands of the people smugglers. Bastien is a new lieutenant in the Calais precinct who strives to make inroads into the lawlessness of Jungle. There is a mute Egyptian boy used as a sex object by the Afghan community who may have information on Adam's family and there is a wanted Daesh recruiting officer who is of interest to the French secret service. Norek makes a good job of weaving these strands together into a police thriller. It is fast moving and the characters are sympathetically drawn.

If the story sometimes stretches credibility then the descriptions of life in the jungle makes brutal sense. The Calais police while not wanting to enter the jungle have to uphold the law outside of it and so the nightly battle to stop the migrants getting onto the lorries heading for the ferry terminals, is played out as a tactical match between the migrants and the police. Violence erupts at flash point moments and the running battles are vividly described. Norek gives his characters good back stories and so there is plenty of room for strong female characters, both as family members of the police officers and also as aid workers in the Jungle. The desperation of the migrants some of whom face impossible odds to get across to England is never far from the storyline and the transient life in the Jungle which is ruled by the largest communities is a battle for survival. Nobody wants the Jungle, nobody wants the refugee camp, the town of Calais is facing financial ruin because of the destruction of its tourist trade, the police force are hopelessly undermanned and cannot get to grips with the life in the camp. An impossible situation which sweeps up many innocent victims and an air of desperation hovers over this novel making it a riveting read. Norek does not overdo the violence and his sympathies are with the victims. This novel provides a birds-eye view of another world that most of us would be thankful that we are not a part of, but the reality is sometimes too close for comfort. A four star read.

First published in his native France as Code 93 in 2013, The Lost and the Damned by Olivier Norek is the first book of the Banlieues Trilogy to be translated into English (by Nick Caistor). Introducing homicide police Capitaine Victor Coste, Norek draws on his twenty five years of experience as a lieutenant in the investigations department in one of the toughest precincts in Paris in this gritty police procedural.

During the early hours of the morning in a derelict warehouse on the banks of the Canal de L'Ourcq, the body of a large black man is found. To Capitaine Victor Coste it appears he has been shot three times in the chest, but not before he was tortured and his testicles were crudely removed. The body is transferred to the forensic morgue, but as Dr Lea Marquant makes her first cuts, the man lurches from her autopsy table. Quickly identified as a local drug dealer, Bébé Coulibaly, the bloody, bullet pierced sweater he was wearing indicates that there is likely another victim to be found, and tests suggest it’s Franck Samoy, a drug addict. Tracing his mobile phone leads Coste and his team, Ronan, Sam and rookie Johanna, to a vacant villa where they find the badly burned body of Samoy on a folding plastic chair. It’s clear the two unusual cases are linked, and Coste suspects they may have something to do with the anonymous notes he has received directing him to the files of two murdered woman. As Coste investigates the possibilities, a troubling connection to his recently departed lieutenant and an irregularity in police records develops, and he finds himself caught in a web of conspiracy, corruption, and murder.

The Lost and the Damned is a well plotted crime novel that leads the reader through the seedy outskirts of Paris and into the enclaves of the wealthy and powerful, exposing the devious machinations of authority that has triggered the rage of a serial killer. Though it’s a little dark and brutal, with a touch of cynicism, it’s offset by sly humour, and Coste’s earnest search for answers. Though I’m not familiar with the procedures of the French gendarme, the actions of Coste and his team during the investigation seem authentic, as does the motivation and behaviour of the killer.

Coste is an interesting character, principled but not uncompromising, he is a dedicated detective who believes in the integrity of policing. He has a somewhat tortured back story, and as such lives alone, though Dr Lea Marquant piques his interest. Coste’s colleagues generally admire him, and his team are as determined to have his back, as he is to protect theirs. Norek provides a basic sketch of the Groupe 1 members, enough to make sense of their role, though perhaps not quite enough yet to determine who they are.

Nick Caistor deserves praise for his translation which never feels stilted or clumsy, it’s always a concern that nuance or tone will be affected, but I noticed none of that here. I sincerely hope that the second and third books in the trilogy will also be made available in English.

I found The Lost and Damned to be an engrossing and satisfying police procedural I’d definitely recommend to fans of the genre.

Des meurtres qui n'ont rien à voir les uns avec les autres, et à la fin tout se relie.

Zwei Männer, zwei Familien, zwei Schicksale. Nach dem Tod ihres Vaters stürzt Bastien Milliers Frau in eine tiefe Depression. Er hofft, dass sie durch den Umzug in Ihre Heimatstadt Calais wieder zurück ins Leben findet. Er selbst wird dort als Kommissar arbeiten, in der Stadt, in der sich der berühmt berüchtigten Jungle befindet. Adam ist ebenfalls Polizist, jedoch in Syrien und seine Untergrundtätigkeit gegen die Regierung droht langsam kritisch zu werden, so dass er seine Frau Nora und ihre kleine Tochter Maya in Sicherheit bringen muss. Sie sollen vorreisen, über Libyen das Mittelmeer überqueren und ihn an der französisch-englischen Grenze treffen. Doch als Adam im Jungle ankommt, ist von den beiden Frauen nicht zu sehen, er weiß nicht, dass sie nie europäischen Boden betreten haben und sucht sie verzweifelt. Dabei lernt er den jungen Sudanesen kennen, den alle nur Kilani nennen und der massivem Missbrauch ausgesetzt ist. Adam nimmt sich des Jungen an und es dauert nicht lange, bis er auch Bastien begegnet und die Bekanntschaft Spuren bei beiden Männern hinterlässt.

Olivier Noreks Roman, der im vergangenen Jahr mit dem „Prix Sang d’encre des lycéens et des lecteurs“ ausgezeichnet wurde, greift nicht nur ein europaweit hochaktuelles Thema auf, sondern legt vor allem den Finger in die schmerhafte Wunde Frankreichs. Aber meiner Meinung nach gelingt es der Geschichte auch, durchaus differenziert die unterschiedlichen Sichtweisen zum Jungle und dem Wegsehen der Behörden darzustellen. Er reiht sich damit in eine inzwischen beachtliche Anzahl von Autoren und Filmemachern ein, die die Thematik ebenfalls aufgegriffen und umgesetzt haben, wie etwa Emmanuel Carrère in „Brief an eine Zoowärterin aus Calais“ oder Philippe Lioret in „Welcome“.

Im Zentrum der Handlung stehen die beiden Männer mit ihren Familien und der dem Versuch, der Aufgabe als Schützer dieser gerecht zu werden. Als Leser weiß man schon früh, dass auf Adam kein Happy-End wartet. Das Schicksal seiner Frau und Tochter ist hart, aber inzwischen dürfte jedem Leser bekannt sein, dass sie nur zwei von tausenden sind, die jährlich auf der schwierigen Überfahrt das Leben verlieren und skrupellosen Schleppern das Einzelschicksal egal ist. Umso mehr freut man sich, wie sich Adam dem einsamen und schutzlosen Jungen annimmt. Eine Zweckgemeinschaft, wie sie das Leben schreibt. Kilani bleibt stumm für die anderen Figuren, sein Los berührt, aber erst gegen Ende wird das Ausmaß dessen, was er erlebt hat wirklich offenkundig und was er bereit ist, auf sich zu nehmen, um seinen Rettern zu danken. Dass diese Dankbarkeit keinen Ausdruck finden kann, ist ein weiteres heimtückisches Spiel ihrer Bestimmung.

Bastien und seine Familie symbolisieren die Mehrheitsbevölkerung, die plötzlich zwischen den anonymen Flüchtlingen und ihrer erschlagenden Masse und den konkreten Einzelpersonen, die Menschen wie sie selbst sind, hin und her gerissen sind und vorher gültige Grundsätze und Überzeugungen in Frage stellen müssen. Sie werden auf eine Probe gestellt und sind bereit, alles zu riskieren. Norek lässt Menschlichkeit über Rationalität und Pragmatismus siegen, was umso deutlicher die Kluft zwischen politischem Agieren im Großen und dem Handeln des betroffenen Individuums im Kleinen erscheinen lässt.

Norek bietet keine Lösungen für die Flüchtlingsfrage, er schreibt einen Roman, der es jedoch jedem erlaubt, den Blick auf den Menschen hinter den Geschichten aus Fernsehen und Zeitung zu werfen und sich vor Augen zu führen. Ein überzeugender Roman, der auch Spannungselemente geschickt einbaut und dem so der Spagat zwischen aktueller Politik und Unterschätzung gelingt.
