Wow. I wish this had been written a long time ago. Extraordinary writing exploding the myths around ‘Crimes of Passion’. I think I should provide my daughter with a copy. In fact it should be on the school curriculum. This is my number one read of the year.

A sobering book, Professor Monckton-Smith's research is reminiscent of the developing of psychological profiling of serial killers developed by the FBI (as dramatised in Netflix's "Mindhunter"). Her work shows that domestic murder is usually the outcome of a long process of coercive control, not a sudden snap by a "nice guy" perpetrator (it's usually, but not always, as she illustrates, a guy). Her eight stage model enables law enforcement, health workers, social workes (and the general public) a way to pick up warning signs long before things escalate to murder, and goes a long way to answering the old question "why doesn't she just leave". A difficult topic well illustrated with research and experience.… (mais)
