The three heroines of this novel have all passed the age of 50 and have, by taking care of their families, become invisible to the people in their families. They have become granted and now notice that they need to remedy this.

I found this book empowering, because it showed me, what I already knew, there is more to life than grocery shopping, cleaning the house and feeding the family.

An entertaining and novel satirical examination of the relationship between the French and the English. Ostensibly written by an upper class Parisian exiled in London, the book was actually written by an English woman who lived for more than 10 years in France. The slightly condescending tone is superb and applied with equal venom across all aspects of English culture - 'My favourite Shakespeare play is "Hamlet", because there is something almost French in the sensibility of this archetypical modern hero ('sulky' is how Bee put it). However, the play is far too long, with unnecessary details that a more rigorous dramatist would have removed. Racine would have made a better job of it.'… (mais)

I didn't even know this was going to be another fictionalised Paris memoir, I borrowed it on a whim. it was quite enjoyable though, a bit more hen than chick, it was a nice account on what happens when you give up being "a productive member of society". While I found it hard to relate to most of the issues and I would have liked the setting to play a more important role, I still enjoyed this book.

A light read to get me started on my 52 book epic! A very quick, easy book to get into. Having lived in Geneva very close to France it brought back lots of memories. A disappointing (bit of a cop-out) ending but fun all the same.
