1911 journey from New York to Los Angeles, the first coast-to-coast flight. Along the way, Kisor learns that Rodgers himself suffered from severe hearing loss, which adds an unexpected personal connection to the enterprise.

When the remains of three little girls turn up inside railroad hopper cars, Sheriff Steve Martinez faces a troublesome case, for the cars had sat for years on a siding deep inside his beloved Porcupine County. After Steve and his comrades do the spadework, the FBI moves in, thinking their Unsub is both rapist and murderer. A great book about a cross country trip, re-creating an early aviation feat of a flight all the way across the USA, trying to use the same small town airports as the original flight. I thought this was well written and a great story about the USA.

Built around one trip (of many) one way on the California Zephyr (Amtrak style) from Chicago to Oakland, this is far more than what can be seen looking out the window. The author burrows down to include the ambitions and performance of the crew, both the train crews and the service crews. Along the way, the author includes much detail about the railroads involved, local color on many stops, and the people he travels with.
