This book is great in that it represents both Spanish speaking families and Muslim families. It briefly touches on discrimination and prejudice against muslims and mentions Allah and Islamic history. It is written as a letter from a father to his daughter but does not explicitly explore this relationship, but has one or two depictions of a father and daughter together.

To me, the lack of chronological, or any other, organization is slightly offputting, but I suppose that doesn't really matter in a book which is informative and depends heavily upon the reminiscences of individuals who were there at the time. I also wish that he had included more from the older years which I am more interested in, but, again, the author was a beat writer who drew upon sources that he knew. Poignant and charming book. Good for non-Muslims to read for a father's perspective on raising Muslim children in today's world, but also a good reminder to make sure the children we raise know their ancestry, and know they will one day be ancestors. How might we live our lives differently with that in mind? Something to think about.

An empowering story of a parent encouraging his child to celebrate the strengths diversity brings as she recognizes her unique ethnic and religious heritage.
