This is a good series: I find it quite thought provoking. The individual case studies were provided by pastoral care-givers, often members of a CPE (clinical pastoral education) unit. In many cases they were edited to fit the format of the book, but all edits were approved by their writers. Especially valuable to me were the resources often listed at the end of each case.

But, I must admit, it was the invitation, at the end of each case, to think how I might, in the future, handle similar cases.2017-08

Overall, I found this to be a helpful book for lay care givers and clergy alike--especially those who have not take any CPE (Clinical a Pastoral Education) units.

Cases are divided into three categories:
1. Interpersonal Relationships: issues between the patient and others.
2. Intrapersonal Relationships: issues involving the patient's self relationship.
3. Ultimate Relationship: spiritual/divine relationship.

Verbatim reporting was not used in the examples chosen, but the end of each summary includes a section on what the chaplain in question felt were the positives and negatives of the encounter. Outside resources were also listed.

I only gave the book 4 stars because of a great lack (imho): nowhere was it even hinted at that the chaplain was not alone in ministering to the patient; God, who is always present beside us as we minister to others, was basically ignored.
