In “Sweet Rivalry” by Terri Gillespie, readers are immersed in a captivating story that intertwines the genres of Women’s Contemporary, Christian Romance, and Family Life Fiction. The narrative revolves around the lives of Sarah Sweeting and Raven Souwer, identical twins whose fates took dramatically different turns when their mother abducted one.

The poignant exploration of the twins’ separation sets the emotional tone for the entire book. Sarah, burdened with the knowledge of her lost sibling, reaches out to Raven after a chance encounter. The other half of this dynamic duo, Raven, however, grapples with the absence of memories regarding her twin sister. This central conflict adds a layer of complexity to the storyline, evoking a sense of empathy from readers.

The setting of their grandmother’s bakery serves as more than just a backdrop; it becomes a comforting haven that frames the narrative. The bakery’s presence adds a delightful touch to the story, symbolizing the warmth and familiarity of family bonds. As their grandmother faces a health crisis, the twins are drawn together, further intensifying the emotional depth of the narrative.

The reviewer expresses their inability to put the book down, a testament to Terri Gillespie’s skill in crafting a moving and gripping tale. The title, “Sweet Rivalry,” hints at the intricacies of the relationship between the twins, suggesting a narrative that explores the sweetness of familial bonds and the challenges that arise within them.

One particularly intriguing aspect of the plot is the moment when Sarah recognizes someone on television who bears a striking resemblance to her lost sister. This twist introduces an element of mystery, providing readers with a compelling reason to keep turning pages.

In summary, “Sweet Rivalry” offers readers a blend of emotions, from heartache and separation to the anticipation of a heartfelt reunion. Sweet Rivalry is a heartwarming tale of reunited twin sisters, blending elements of faith, family, and romance. I enjoyed getting to know the unique characters and the mouthwatering descriptions in the charming small-town bakery. And the national baking competition fills the plot with excitement.

Sarah and Raven had different upbringings, which reveals struggles and conflicts with family dynamics, but maintains an enjoyable tone. I especially enjoyed the elements of faith, adding a meaningful layer to the tale.

With themes of forgiveness, love, teamwork, and transformation, this sweet Christian story offers engaging touches of mystery and romance.

“Were the Sweeting family secrets about to be revealed? And if so … were either of the sisters ready to learn the truth?”

Having discovered her decades-lost sister while watching a cooking show competition, Sarah Sweeting thinks that life will suddenly be complete. Little does Sarah realize the deep emotional waters both she and her twin, Raven, will have to conquer to begin to form a worthwhile bond.

Gillespie takes an improbable premise and adds just the right amount of romance, family, angst, guilt, and longing to bring us a truly delightful and believable tale.

“What kind of person takes one kid and leaves another?” Sarah wonders why their mother left and didn’t take her.
Raven wishes their mother hadn’t taken her when she left. Each envied the other and had trouble empathizing with the other’s emotional struggles. Will they get in their own way of family, or will other people or secrets undo any chance of them learning to bond?

A great novel, recommended! I received a copy through Celebrate Lit. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

A Penny Saved by Terri Gillespie & Cynthia L. Simmons is a Middle Grades Fantasy and Mystery work. Imagine you were a boy who finds himself forced to move with his mother and younger sister into his grandfather’s home in Georgia. His grandfather, a retired professor, hangs out in his office with only books.

Unable to run, play, or make noise, the only redeeming factor is the iPad his father bought for him before going overseas. But unknown to Mason, a magical treasure resides in his grandfather’s office, an 1860 Indian Head penny named Penny, who is actually alive. But only Mason’s little sister can hear her.

When the penny disappears, Mason sets out to solve the mystery in order to restore his grandfather’s treasure to him. The authors do an amazing job of creating a story that will draw readers of all ages into the book. One of my favorite characters in the book is R.B., the weird boy down the street. The authors did an excellent job developing the characters and creating descriptions I could visualize in my head as I read.

So, if you are looking for a work of Middle Grades Fantasy and Mystery, check out A Penny Saved by Terri Gillespie & Cynthia L. Simmons. I definitely recommend it.
