The Spartan Chronicles is a slim book barely over 70 pages, the reminiscences of the author's stint a a weather observer and radio operator in Canada's arctic during the 1950s. His employer, Spartan Air Services, gave their employees training that focussed primarily on technical help for their radio operation duties, keeping the generator running, and so on. Contrary to the experiences of an acquaintance of mine in the 21st century, Scary Polar Bear Orientation was not on the training agenda. Frood and his partner were scared half out of their wits by a bear stalking their camp, but I'm not sure that even to this day he understands how much danger they were in. Basic Arctic Survival training was also lacking, contributing to a terrifying experience with a hike, a June snowstorm, and zero visibility. The lack of maps didn't help either. Only by sheer luck did they literally stumble over their generator (as a character in the bear episode as well, it's almost like the third partner in their camp) and find safety. After all this frightening adventure, I laughed out loud when the two were spooked by a knock on the aluminum door of their tent. Was it a bear of uncanny human-like intelligence? Or perhaps a shared hallucination? No spoilers here: read the book!

Thomas Frood has some good stories and tells them well. I'm pleased to have been the recipient of a copy of this book under the auspices of the Early Reviewer program.

3.5 stars

This book is just under 100 pages so it's short and an easy read. Basically this book is about the author, Thomas Frood, and his time as an air service employee in the '50s. It's just a few interesting stories but I enjoyed it! The story about the bear made my heart drop. I knew he would be okay but I was still worried how it would go for his partner.

I think there was some technical speak that made the writing a bit clunky and, at parts, confusing. But I think having the raw moments of human error was so important. The author never pretends he was perfect at his job and even highlights some of his (and his crew's) mistakes. I really appreciate that because it makes the author feel more relatable for the reader.

I also really think the tribute to one of his former coworkers (and friend) was sweet. Sharing stories about him with the rest of the team was really nice and a great way of remembering someone who had a large impact on everyone.

All in all, very good collection of memories. I appreciate being able to read and review this.
