Osborne, Arden, Wesker, Beckett, Pinter. Essays by John Russell Brown (he liked an essay I wrote in graduate school), A.E. Dyson, Charles Marowitz, Brustein and others. Really only Osborne, Beckett and Pinter lasted. Arden never made it to Broadway; Wesker was produced maybe 6 times in the late 60's/early 70s? Where's Stoppard? Where's Hare? So much for scholars. It's all about performance.½

Using the most up-to-date scholarship (since Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was destroyed by fire in 1666), author John Russell Brown and illustrator David Gentleman help readers envision the design and uses of the theatre that shaped the content and performance of the Bard's plays.
