From the frontlines of modern medicine, this is an insider portrait of a veterinarian, his furry patients, and the blend of old-fashioned instincts and cutting-edge technology that defines pet care in the 21st century. Dr. Trout, an Englishman who is a staff surgeon at Boston's Angell Animal Medical Center, takes the reader on a vicarious journey through 24 intimate, heartrending hours in his life; his wry, companionable voice offers enlightening anecdotes about cuddly (or not-so-cuddly) pets and their variously zany, desperate, and demanding owners --From publisher description. The author makes a few comparisons between himself and Herriot. About the only one I agree with is they were both citizens of the UK. Trout’s stories, while entertaining, are detached and cool; what I would expect from a surgeon - technical skill without sentiment.
His stories lack the emotional connection so brilliantly shared by Herriot. Perhaps, it is more a reflection of Trout’s specialty or the environment he works in. But I found his story less heartwarming and missing that crucial element of a vet who likes people as much as he does their animals. ( )
