Review: This historical fiction book includes accurate information about segregation and the discrimination against African Americans in the United States after slavery was abolished. It contains history about a man named Winslow Homer who drew African Americans in his sketchbooks and was not well received in Southern communities. It also has some elements of fiction due to the author's need to fill in parts of the story that were not clearly stated such as the life of the girl and her relationship with her mother.
Setting: The setting of this story is placed in an appropriate area (the South) for the attitudes towards African Americans post-slavery. The language used and the types of events that occurred are fitting to the time period.
Use: unit on slavery/segregation, learning about African Americans, art lesson, learning about culture (Jamaican) ( )

Critique: This can be considered a historical fiction because it is protraying something that Winslow Homer actually did in his life without making up any words or actions about what he really did. The story is carried by the interactions of the little girl observing Winslow Homer. This book is a good example of setting because it is given a very specific time period and location during the time Homer was painting in the south. ( )

This is a biography even though it only covers a small part of Winslow Homer's life. It provides a setting in which he painted "Dressing for the Carnival" one of this "country's greatest and most controversial paintings (according to the author). The author writes that the story is "based on true accounts of Winslow Homer's 1876 visit to Petersburg, Virginia".
The illustrations show the difference in the white people and the African Americans. They show the differences in their dress and homes and the differences in their interactions. One of the illustrations was modeled after Homer's painting, "Dressing for the Carnival". There are only a few differences between the painting and the illustration.
