Very comprehensive survey of developments in space and the possibilities of mining and permanent residence on the Moon and Mars. The number of countries with space programmes surprised me: it is easy to hear a news report and treat it as an isolated event. The prospects for the future are frightening, with destruction of satellites and rival claims to territory.
It reminded me of the words of the great American astronomer Carl Sagan, who in 1994 captured a similar sentiment in his book Pale Blue Dot, the title of which comes from a photograph of Earth taken by Voyager 1 from 6 billion kilometres away: 'Every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar", every "supreme leader", every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
