I couldn't get used ot he narrator's lack of expression, but it kind of fit the main character. Gordon works as a location scout in the film industry when Hollywood comes to film movies in Canada to save money and in his off-season he works as a private eye. When one of his co-worker's uncles go missing, Gordon is on the case, although he is sure the target has committed suicide. Along the way he starts a relationship with Ethel, who has a bit part in the movie he is working on. FROM AMAZON: Behind the scenes, nothing is what it seems. Gord Stewart, 40 years old, single, moved back into his suburban childhood home to care for his widowed father. But his father no longer needs care, and Gord is stuck in limbo. He’s been working in the movie business as a location scout for years, and when there isn’t much filming, as a private eye for a security company run by ex-cops, OBC. When a fellow crew member asks him to find her missing uncle, Gord reluctantly takes the job. The police say the uncle walked into some dense woods in Northern Ontario and shot himself, but the man’s wife thinks he’s still alive. With the help of his movie business and OBC connections, Gord finds a little evidence that the uncle may be alive. Now Gord has two problems: what to do when he finds a man who doesn’t want to be found, and admitting that he’s getting invested in this job. For the first time in his life, Gord Stewart is going to have to leave the sidelines and get into the game. Even if it might get him killed.
At the start of this refreshing series launch from McFetridge (Black Rock), movie location scout Gordon Stewart agrees to do a favor for the production manager on his current film: locate her missing uncle, Kevin Mercer, whose pickup was found in a wooded area near Sudbury, Ontario. Given the high suicide rate among older men, the authorities assume that Kevin took his own life and that hunters will eventually find his body. Kevin’s wife, however, believes he’s alive. Meanwhile, Gordon, who does freelance work for OBC, a private investigation firm, accepts OBC’s offer of a quick job tailing a woman for a few hours. Gordon suspects that she might be one of those accusing a billionaire client of OBC of rape. Gordon persists, despite misgivings about both investigative jobs. He’s occasionally helped and sometimes hindered by movie extra Ethel Mack, who’s writing a one-woman show about comedy sidekicks. The lively exchanges between Gordon and Ethel lighten the mood while providing insights into some serious topics such as suicide and the #MeToo movement. Intelligent characters are a plus. Readers will look forward to seeing more of Gordon. Pertence à sériePrêmios

Working as a location scout was a little different and interesting as was the subject of suicide in middle aged men. Gord was a likeable character but when he gets involved with bit actress Ethel and she starts doing some investigating, it was a bit annoying. The dialogue had a genuine feel to it. The story was slow in places but overall an ok story. ( )
