Rarely does a book open with such an emotionally suspenseful scene. I felt stunned as I read the dramatic, heart wrenching story of a mother’s attempt to leave her abusive, criminal husband. Like Lions is a sequel to Bull Mountain and it’s just as dark and gritty. This story takes place on Bull Mountain, Georgia where a sheriff is determined to extinguish the crime and violence from his community. Such a tall order considering he is constantly fighting against his own family whose legacy is so powerful. This time, Sheriff Clayton Burroughs’ enemies come after his wife and child. Brian Panowich doesn’t just write really great novels; his story telling abilities are masterful. Panowich skillfully illustrates how easily the boundaries are blurred for Clayton as he navigates to protect his family. And, wow…the ending truly left me frozen. I had to sit and digest that one for some time. (

Wow! Even better than the authors first book Bull Mountain (which you really should read first).
The action in Like Lions is non stop.
Crazy southern red neck white trash vs even crazier criminal trash. This was a thrill ride that never lets up
And ends perfectly.
A great book. (

Having noticed this in the new fiction section of the library, the summary and back cover quotes caused interest. Unfamiliar with the author, I had high hopes. The beauty of life is each spirit is drawn to certain elements and in this case, the story was far too simple, predictable with characters that lacked depth. Having read many authors who focus on Southern US culture, the 'red neck' types are of little appeal but this appears to be the author's focus. Regardless, it managed to hold interest due to 3 page chapters but not much more. (

This was a good follow-up to Bull Mountain, and I'd recommend reading that one first. This was pretty similar and I liked it a lot, although I occasionally got a little annoyed with Clayton, the sheriff. He kept doing things that he knew was wrong and self-destructive, yet did it anyway. There are lots of people who have problems with alcohol, drugs, or gambling, and get in a lot of trouble but don't realize they are making mistakes until it's too late. That's easier to take than someone that knows for sure they are making the mistakes, but do it anyway. But it's always easier to see the mistakes of others, I guess.

I'm not rushing in to read the next one of the series, though. I need a break from the violence although I probably won't wait very long before revisiting the gang to see what they get up to. (
