Robbie Thompson and Justin Jordan’s Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern features art by Barnaby Bagenda, colors by Alex Guimarães, and letters by Ed Dukeshire. The story begins with the Green Lantern Corps’ old nemesis Sinestro summoning a universal ring, capable of tapping into all the powers of the emotional spectrum. Unfortunately, it crosses a time boundary and lands on a parallel Earth, one that is isolated in a time loop where human civilization will always collapse, being replaced by sentient apes, only for mutated humans to destroy it, but not before some apes manage to travel back in time and begin the cycle anew. Hal Jordan and Sinestro find themselves on the Planet of the Apes, though without their powers. Dr. Cornelius, a chimpanzee archaeologist, finds the universal ring while looking for Taylor near the Forbidden Zone. He later dismantles the mutant humans’ Alpha Omega bomb, using the parts to create new rings of power and form an army. After finding Hal Jordan, General Ursus plans to invade the Forbidden Zone in order to wipe out the human civilization located there. Sinestro kidnaps Dr. Zaius and orders the statesman to bring him to a tomb, where a buried body holds a green ring. A Green Lantern team led by Guy Gardner travels to the alternate Earth to retrieve Hal Jordan, stop Sinestro, and destroy the universal ring. Unfortunately, a Red Lantern team follows them to the past. Worse, Guy Gardner brought Gorilla Gordd, who uses his psychic powers to take control of the various armies in an attempt to conquer the Planet of the Apes.

The story, though not set within Boom! Studios on-going Planet of the Apes series, reflects the longevity and creativity of their license. Boom! previously published a crossover with IDW Comics’ Star Trek license and subsequently published a crossover with King Kong. This crossover with DC’s Green Lantern does require some familiarity with the various rings of power, but it doesn’t detract from the overall story if readers don’t notice every cameo. It also does a great job grappling with the chronology of the original Planet of the Apes franchise and its characters, offering a what-if? story that will entertain Apes fans new and old. ( )
