Thomas Osborne delivers a gripping account of 1870s Ontario pioneer life. The view 16-year-old Thomas Osborne first had of Muskoka was at night, trudging alone with his even younger brother along unmarked primitive roads to find their luckless father who, in 1875, had decided to make a new start for his beleaguered family on some "free land" in the bush east of the pioneer village of Huntsville, Ontario. Thomas Osborne reluctantly left his job in a textile mill in Philadelphia in 1875 to join his father and brother, Arthur, to homestead in the Muskoka area of Ontario. Some of the adventures he becomes involved in are almost too extreme to be believed. He spent five years clearing land, hunting game, working for other settlers, walking miles to Huntsville and Bracebridge to deliver fish & venison to stores in order to trade for supplies. He became an accomplished canoeist surviving storms on the lakes in the Lake of Bays area. He describes the injuries he and his family members suffered and treated with unusual remedies. There are also the sad stories of pioneers who did not survive.
Need a guide to what pioneer life in late 19th Century Ontario was like, read this. This is also a very readable volume as Osborne is a very capable writer. ( )
