My basically pleasant, neutral attitude to this book about a dinosaur who takes kids to school and knocks things down on the way because he's SO BIG--that is, basically a Clifford book--really throws into relief just how egregious Clifford books, about which I have a decidedly non-neutral attitude, really are. I thought this book was creative. The illustrations were a little flat, but looked beautiful in watercolor and pencil. It is a fantasy story about Gus the dinosaur bus, who starts causing too many traffic problems. He eventually finds a new job that makes him much happier.

After reading this book, I had mixed feelings about it. I disliked the illustrations it provided because it wasn't appealing to my eye. Not only did the drawings lack color, but they were very dull and simple. Throughout the book, the illustrator only used four colors: red, blue, green, and black. Although the readers would still be able to interpret the story through the pictures, it was not the best drawings in the world. On the other hand, I liked the plot of the story. It had a mild suspense that was just right for the intended audience. Young readers would enjoy this the concept of the book having a dinosaur as a school bus. The overall message of this book is that everyone should embrace their talents. ( )

This charming tale about a multi-purpose supersaurus reminds a bit of some classics by Syd Hoff. ( )
