Her 'father' has been trying to get Crowe for years. It has been awhile since I read the previous book and I would recommend rereading as I felt a little disjointed trying to put all the pieces together as I was readings. Crowe comes across as very overbearing and she crumbles at his touch. Lora writes good suspense and intense love scenes but for me Crowe was too much the bully and Amelia's behavior was too naïve at times given her history.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: A book full of sex and not much plot, this is officially my first DNF since starting to review for Dark Faerie Tales.

Opening Sentence: The file was far more than he’d expected.

The Review:

Well, this is it. My very first DNF book since starting to review at Dark Faerie Tales. It goes against my nature to DNF a book, but I just could not make it through this one. I knew within the first five percent of the book that it wasn’t going to be my cup of tea, but I wanted to give it a shot. I gave it until the halfway mark, and it was a long process to get there. Once I got halfway through, I just couldn’t do it anymore.

I’ve said before that I’m not really fond of books that are all sex and no plot. When there was a sex scene within the first 3 percent of the book, I had a feeling this was going to be one of those, and if the first half is anything to go by, that is definitely the case. I don’t think there was one scene with the two main characters that did not involve sex. It got old very fast, especially since the “hero” of the story is so unlikeable. It seemed like every sex scene involved Amelia saying she wasn’t interested, Crowe being completely arrogant and determined to prove her wrong, and them having sex despite Amelia not really wanting to. Mentally that is – physically, she’s completely into it, so I guess that’s supposed to make it ok, but it was still really distasteful to me.

As far as the plot goes, not a whole lot happened in that first 50 percent that wasn’t sex. Crowe and Amelia are trying to draw out Amelia’s father, a serial killer who killed Crowe’s parents and wants to make his life miserable. He’s faked own death and gone into hiding. I was faintly interested in this storyline, but with it not going anywhere, I wasn’t interested enough to keep reading.

All in all, this just was not a good read. As much as I hate to say it, it was torture for me to even get through the first 50 percent. Maybe people who enjoyed the other books in this series will enjoy this one, but I just couldn’t do it.

Notable Scene:

Don’t leave me, she wanted to beg. The words locked inside her. Please, please God, don’t leave me. Don’t let me go. The need remained locked in her soul.

She wouldn’t beg him for more than this, and she would only beg when the pleasure was too painful to bear.

But she would always, always love –

The room was silent, the hands on the clock still hanging on the wall ticking ever closer to the moment when he’d have to leave her.

What the hell had he done?

She had somehow managed to slip into his heart, and Crowe knew he had no choice but to walk away. For her sake, he had to. He couldn’t allow this to happen again. Each time he held her, each time he took her, he was risking her further. Each time, she burrowed deeper into the heart he was certain he no longer had.

The heart his training had ruthlessly pared down to essential function only. He could have sworn there was no longer the ability to love within it.

But Amelia was proving differently.

FTC Advisory: Macmillan/St. Martin’s Press provided me with a copy of Ultimate Sins. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review. ( )
