Interesting, complex, complicated three dimensional characters 3. Plausible, unique setting -- bio terrorism has ended the world as we know it and created "Beaters" (mindless zombie-like creatures) 4. Interesting plot. In the short story survivors, recovering alcoholic Cass is in the Box with Smoke when a wild boy and his grandmother are found, and Cass battles to keep the boy safe. Despite its shortness, it is an interesting, beautifully written story. Highly recommended. Other than that it was alright, didn't really touch on the huge upheaval that must have gone on in the convent/stadium but I guess it was just a little bridging novella after all. (
