Pequena biografia
Patricia Wentworth was the pen name of Dora Amy Elles. She was born in India, then under the British Raj, where her father was stationed as a British army officer. As was the custom, she and her brothers were sent to private school in England. She returned to India and married George F. Dillon in 1906. He had three children from a previous marriage and they had one child together. After his death, she and the children moved to England. In 1920 she remarried to George Oliver Turnbull and settled in Surrey. She had begun writing while in India and won the Melrose Prize in 1910 for her first published novel, A Marriage Under the Terror, set during the French Revolution. As Patricia Wentworth, she wrote a series of 32 crime novels beginning in 1928 with The Grey Mask – the last was published in 1961, the year of her death – featuring Miss Maud Silver, a brilliant retired governess with a passion for knitting and Tennyson, who becomes a private detective and works closely with Scotland Yard. It's noteworthy that Miss Silver predates Miss Marple, the creation of Wentworth's contemporary Agatha Christie. Patricia Wentworth also wrote a book of verse for children and a couple of other poetry volumes, plus more than 30 other books outside the Miss Silver series, for a total of 70 novels in her career.

The would-be victim is a spineless, passive dreep. No wonder her inheritance is tied up in a trust, every cad on the hunt for a rich wife must've positively drooled when she walked into the room. Not much mystery or investigation, just an obnoxious and somewhat obvious grind.

I have never gotten around to reading a Patricia Wentworth novel before, and I am very glad that I finally did. It was a ripping yarn, fast-paced and well drawn, with good, competent, and sometimes lovely writing. The personalities of the women are very dated, and there isn’t a whole lot of depth to it, but who needs depth in a quick, pleasant read?

My second Miss Silver and it's another perfectly constructed mystery. One of my big bugbears of classic cosy private detective mysteries is that often the big reveal depended on a clue that was completely hidden from the reader and not even hinted at. Like, you're just supposed guess at this backstory of this side character that no one has ever even slightly referenced. You often get those stories, and then there's this Miss Silver mystery.

The story lets you know firsthand that it's deliberately shielding clues from you. It gives you a conversation from one perspective in one chapter, and then rehashes the exact same conversation from another perspective with different tags and descriptions. Not only that, it switches viewpoints every chapter, providing such insights into relationships from both those in it and those perceiving it from outside. I felt spoilt from such richly layered storytelling.

Miss Silver herself is used sparingly, with the rest of the cast allowed their turns in centre stage. Wentworth also managed to walk that line between hard noir and happy resolution village mystery, producing a sharply refined mystery worthy of the golden age.

Thomasina Elliot has hired Miss Silver to locate Anna Ball. Anna had been working as a companion for a Mrs. Dugdale, a demanding invalid who wasn’t Anna’s cup of tea. Anna took another job as a governess for the Craddocks, but then shortly leaves them. Three children, whose parents don’t believe in supervising their children, were a bit too much to handle. In both instances, Anna leaves no forwarding address or continues her correspondence with Thomasina.

Miss Silver locates Anna’s last employer and takes the governess position with the Craddocks. Not difficult, as Miss Silver had been a governess for a number of years prior to becoming a detective.

Miss Silver meets the various residents of the ‘colony’ and is able to get an idea of Anna and her life there. Miss silver also finds things are not as presented by the residents. All have secrets to hide. Secrets Miss Silver discovers as she searches for clues to the disappearance of Anna Ball.
