DCI Banks helps the chief constable to track down his teenaged daughter, but a couple of months later her violent death occurs at about the same time as the killing of a local small-time criminal. At first the two deaths seem separate, but soon enough potential connections start emerging.

DCI Banks gets a break from reports, memos, and presentations when the chief constable sends him to investigate a discovery of bones in a village drowned under a reservoir in the 1950s but which has resurfaced because of drought. He and the other police are able to find out quite quickly who the buried person was, but uncovering how she came to be there takes more effort and a bit of good luck too. With the way the book weaves in another narrative, as a reader you know more than the police and keep wondering how they might get there too.… (mais)

The fact that it's about three weeks since I read this, and I can no longer remember much about it doesn't speak well for this book. However, at the time I did enjoy it. A routine minor crime of a tractor theft soon turns into a thoroughly disturbing double murder hunt. As ever, Robinson evokes well the routine of the detective's life - utter tedium interspersed with moments of danger and excitement, together with a real feeling for the North Yorkshire landscape. It's a good holiday read.

A clever story from Peter Robinson, a stand-alone that's not part of the Inspector Banks series.

Following his wife's painful death, composer Chris Lowndes returns from America to his native Yorkshire, buying, unseen, a rather remote house near Richmond. It turns out to have been the home of Grace Fox, hanged in the 1950s for murdering her husband.

The plot unfolds by the device of interspersing first of all a contemporary description of the trial, and later, Grace's own war time diaries (she was a nurse) with Chris's own tale: he becomes almost obsessive in wishing to discover te 'truth' about Grace's story.

As an investigation into this long-put-to-bed murder, it's involving and interesting. Chris's own developing love affair with Heather, and his detailed summaries of the music he's playing and the wine he's drinking are less so. He seems to have the leisure and the means to follow his whims at a moment's notice, and doesn't come over as a sympathetic person. But it's a good yarn, and one from which I learnt quite a lot about the role of nurses in the Far East during WWII.

A good page-turner.
