I didn't enjoy The Austen Escape much at all.

The book is the story of Mary and Isabel, friends since grade two, who go to an expensive Austen week outside of Bath where they are immersed in period costume, food, and entertainments, and where Isabel enters a disassociative state, which happens sometimes. In that state, Isabel believes that she is actually an Austen character. The book has interesting historical details, a couple of romances, a happy ending, and some well-developed characters.

But.

The story was chaotic. There were too many characters, and having them doubled into characters/Austen characters that they're playing made that even more difficult to follow. Towards the end of the book, I realized that part of my irritation came from the fact that it read like a soap opera, where most of the action would be extraneous if people only told each other the truth. As in soap operas, this book is full of lies and misunderstandings, far too many coincidences, and a budget amongst characters that allows for first-class air travel and limousines and expensive retreats. I don't enjoy books with unlimited budgets; it's not realistic, and I like my stories to be somewhat realistic even they're fantasy.

There were redeeming qualities. The main character, Mary, is an engineer in love with all things electrical, and the research for her passion was obviously well done. The author's knowledge of the ins and outs of Regency life and Jane Austen novels was excellent. Research aside, I didn't like the book or the artifice in it; the book felt distinctly non-Austenesque.

Emily comes to Atlanta to do repairs on a home damaged by fire. Her company rents space from Joseph for her. He takes her to his aunt and uncle's restaurant where she meets Ben, his brother. They are enamored with each other. When Ben is to return home to Italy, he marries Emily and takes her home. Will she find a place in his family? Will she be able to make her art?

I enjoyed this. This is a character study of Emily. She affects everyone she meets. She has an affect on Ben. He is as besotted with her as she is with him. Time seems to stand still as they sit up and talk all night. Her sister stands on her own two feet as Emily is not there to help her out of her difficulties. When she gets to Italy, she affects everyone from Francesca to her father-in-law and mother-in-law. She even finally affects Joseph who has not been home in 18 years. She is finally able to get to family secret out of them.

I liked Emily. She sees what most do not, and she tries so hard to fix things for people. I liked Ben and his acceptance of Emily as she is. They have their rough patches, but he will go to any lengths to make Emily happy. Emily is vibrant, curious, and intelligent. I liked her father-in-law's way of communicating. He never gave direst answers but always seemed to know what your question was and provided the answer.

I was glad I read this book. I will be finding more by this author.

“Don’t die in the waiting room of the future.”

Another phenomenal historical fiction from Katherine Reay! I was in high school when the Berlin Wall seemed to come down overnight. The Berlin Letters swept me back in time to 1989 when punk rock was at its height and the Iron Curtain was finally coming down. This powerful story of a father and daughter separated by a wall of information and a literal wall kept me on the edge of my seat.

Luisa grew up loving cracking the codes her grandfather created for her. Now a code breaker for the CIA, she uncovers a link to her own past while decoding letters from the WWII era.

After once being a proud Soviet East Berliner, journalist Haris Voekler is now disillusioned by the unkept promises of the GDR. After losing his daughter and wife, he begins writing coded letters to his father-in-law who lives on the other side of the wall. He shares what’s happening as neighbor spies on neighbor and the underground youth punk movement begins working for freedom.

After her grandfather’s death Luisa discovers hidden letters from her father. Learning he’s alive and in prison, she attempts a daring rescue to free him from East Berlin.

This book was such a touching, suspenseful snapshot of what was going on in Germany 1989. The intensity is palpable especially when Luisa is in East Berlin trying to rescue her father. When the borders are suddenly opened, I loved the feeling of both euphoria and fear as the people wonder if it’s real and lasting or if East Germany’s iron fist will close them again. When Luisa & Haris meet for the first time, it’s such an emotional yet intense moment after being separated for 20 plus years.

The twists and turns, complex relationships, powerful historical details woven throughout, suspense and even a hint of romance kept me eagerly turning the pages. Definitely recommend this amazing book to historical fiction lovers. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author and publisher through TLC Booktours. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.
