Crying: it's just something we do, right? And many of us go out of our way to try to avoid it, especially when in the presence of others. I don't know that I'd personally given much thought to the benefits of it beyond the notion that sometimes a good cry is what one needs to get through a challenging time. This book challenged my assumptions and brought to light many of the previously undiscovered (by me) benefits of being a little more open with one's tears.

This book was not what I expected, it was more. I expected, and got, the physiological and psychological effects of crying on the individual, both as a person and as a part of society. What I did not expect, and also got, was crying as communal grief for harm done by such things as white supremacy, homophobia, and capitalism. This gives us two reasons for the subtitle, “Why Our Tears Matter”. First is our own personal reason and need to cry, as an emotional outlet. Second is a collective reason, to bring us together to acknowledge ways society has caused harm, both to people and creation, then move forward to, hopefully, a solution.… (mais)
