Thwe first part is a chronological selection from Beowulf, Chaucer and Langland to Siegfried Sassoon. This is followed by topical sections, chronological within the topic, on Trade, Social Problems, Human Nature, Lyric Emotions, Humor, Wierd Tales, Creative Effort, Outlook on LIfe, and then an editorial survey of English literature from the begining to early 20th century. A lot of the individual selections are intreresting --Evelyn Underhill on "Lady Poverty" for example.
