Mr Badger works as an event manager at a very posh London hotel. Every morning when he arrives at work, he says hello to Algernon. He doesn’t expect an answer because Algernon is a very large ape standing in a glass case. But, one day when Mr Badger arrives at the hotel – Algernon is missing! Mr Badger has no idea where Algernon might be. How could someone move him, and where could one hide such an enormous animal? Mr. Badger covers the empty case with a curtain, along with a note which says: “Algernon is away but will be back shortly.” Mr Badger hopes this will buy him some time to find the missing ape.
Written and illustrated by Australian author, Leigh Hobbs, this is a perfect book for children who are starting on chapter books and it would also make a great read-aloud. The illustrations that appear on every page are delightfully quirky and the short story contains enough suspense to keep children reading. There are four books in the Mr Badger series (this is the 2nd).
