I've been interested in the Titanic for a decades -- ever since my first exposure to A Night to Remember. That's why I bought this catalogue as soon as I saw it. Besides photographs of artifacts recovered from the ship, it has photos of some passengers and crew members, and of the ship's interior and exterior, some of those being what it looks like on the ocean bottom. Artifacts that were part of the ship often have their color photos near the old black and white or sepia photographs of the rooms where they were. Some of those recovered artifacts are made of paper!

Pages 43-47 are concerned with the recovery of those artifacts and what it has taken to conserve them. There are a few reproductions from The Illustrated London News.

The back cover is the front page of the April 16, 1912 edition of The New York Times. There is more than one design for the front cover. My copy shows 'a detail of an arm support from one of Titanic's deck benches'.

I haven't seen the exhibit and don't expect to, but having this catalogue is the next best thing.

This was an excellent books – one of my favorites I’ve read about the “Titanic” disaster. It’s different from so many of the books I’ver read before in that it’s not just another rehashing of the sinking, and all the events that led up to it. Instead, this book looks at some of the people on board. It’s separated into three sections, one for first class passengers, second class, and third class, and in each section, there are mini-biographies of several of the passengers and families who traveled in each class. There are wonderful, poignant stories here that I’d not read before. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in this period of history. It’s not a book just about the “Titanic,” but also about that era in general, and the way society functioned under this sort of a class structure. Really excellent. 10/10… (mais)
