18 short films about love in Paris. A few are good, one or two are bad, most are just filling time in a very Film Student Exercise way. It's kind of impressive that any manage to be good, with only a few minutes to work with.

Eighteen short films about love of various kinds in Paris (and by extension, love for the city itself). Some are much quirkier than others but which you prefer is likely to be a matter of personal taste. Some are quite thort-provoking and none are juist tourist stauff. The shortness of the films (max 10 minutes, some less) keeps the pace up and even if you don't care for some segments, it's never boring.

Still a treat after 20 years. I took this disc out to review the added feature when Gurinder Chadha makes aloo gobi with her mother and aunt watching in restaurant kitchen in Soho. Not everyone know how to cook aloo gobi, contrary to the line voiced by the lead.

OK. Enjoyable enough.½

Secondogenita di una famiglia immigrata negli anni '50, la diciannovenne anglo-indiana Jess Bhamra gioca a calcio di nascosto invece di imparare a cucinare e trovarsi un marito, sognando di far parte di una squadra di professioniste. 3° lungometraggio di G. Chadha – nata in Kenya e cresciuta alla BBC –, è il caso raro di film sul calcio femminile in cui il football è messo in immagini con coreografico brio negli allenamenti e, un po' meno bene, in partita. Scritta dalla regista con Paul Mayeda Berges, la commedia ha i limiti evidenti di una success story di hollywoodiana ingegneria con tutti gli stereotipi al posto giusto. Al di là del programmatico ottimismo che diventa qua e là gioia di vivere, contano la scioltezza registica, la direzione degli attori e la colonna musicale, in cui i ritmi del pop britannico si contaminano con le melodie tradizionali del Punjab. Il titolo inglese sta, più o meno, per “piazzala come B.”. Indica la parabola tipica di David Beckham, famoso numero 7 del Manchester United su calcio di punizione: traiettoria a giro, barriera superata, pallone in rete.

OK, so the ending was entirely preposterous, but I enjoyed this film version of the first two Georgia Nicholson books.
