I had bariatric surgery in December and since then I’ve been trying to find more ways to get nutrition into my diet. I’ve always loved smoothies, but I tend make the same ones over and over, and was in desperate need of some inspiration. That’s where Simple Superfood Smoothies comes in.

I really like the layout of this book, as it is focused on superfoods, with each superfood having its own chapter. Each recipe also highlights the primary benefits of said recipe, as well as the nutrition facts per serving, taking out all the guesswork. All of the recipes only have a few ingredients, are simple to make, and taste delicious! I loved learning how to make nut milk and nut butters and educating myself on the benefits of superfoods.

The book is also aesthetically pleasing, with delicious photography that is not only beautiful, but inspiring! This is a great cookbook, and exactly what I was looking for to put some variety into my diet.

The first section focuses on basic fruits and vegetables used to make smoothies while the second part gets into spice enhancements. Each recipe tries to include a type of fiber, protein, fat, and liquid. One of the most helpful entries is a superfood ingredient amount, combination, flavor, and health benefits chart. Be sure to check the ingredient list before starting a recipe.

This would make a terrific primer book for someone starting out on the odyssey of eating healthy, anti-inflammatory food, and learning to cook from scratch. The author lays it out very neatly covering the whys and wherefores, along with the how-tos. She sets up three weeks of menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, gives you a shopping list, tells you what can be prepared ahead and talks you through each recipe and the benefits of the ingredients in it. The recipes all tell you which diet plan they are suited for, from Paleo, no gluten to anti-nightshade and a lot more in between. She gives alternative ingredients at the end of the recipes so you can adjust it to fit your specific needs.

I have tried one recipe (the butternut squash cream sauce); that one was out of this world delicious! Talk about a no guilt delight for pasta, cauliflower and more. Having read through the other recipes, they all look quite good, with a minimum of ingredients and fuss.

I would prefer to have this in a paper book so I can page back and forth for inspirations, but maybe that's just my old-school reading habits coming through.
