Entertaining romp through Victorian Liverpool look at the deeds of all sorts of rogues, from highwaymen, street gangs, swindlers, pickpockets and the rascally packet rats, the hard-core seamen who manned the packet ships sailing between Liverpool and New York, and who were inclined to mutiny if sufficiently provoked. Good start to hopefully a fine and continuing series. Jack Windrush discovers his awkward antecedents and is enrolled in a disreputable regiment all in one day. His path to glory takes him to Burma and a steep learning curve in its jungles and swamps. Britain's empire building is at its peak and opportunities abound for a young officer.
